Since a number of players here prefer to see the game's numerous flaws and bugs as important "features" adding to "difficulty" (see: "Friendly fire thread", etc.), I'd like to suggest a special kind of in-game mechanism dedicated to keeping the game "difficult" for them, while allowing developers to improve the game, making it more playable for normal people.
I'd like to propose a special kind of device, that can be bought and installed into player's ship - you could call it "hardcore device" - having the only function: to make the game for its owner asdifficult annoying and frustrating as possible:
First of all, the device will increase the game's "difficulty" by being extremely expensive - like several million credits, even for lower class version.
Higher class versions can have even bigger price tags, perhaps even more expensive than biggest ships available.
Since the device is supposed to make your game harder, all effects it produces will of course be only negative:
I'm sure this kind of thing is going to be very easy to add, because most of these features are already implemented in the game.
I could suggest some more, like: make trading more like exploration - where you cannot sell several system data at once, so you will have to sell every 1 ton of your cargo by manually selecting it and clicking "sell" and then confirm it with another click - but I'd better stop here and allow other commanders to come up with more functions for the hardcore device.
If you have read all this, I am sure you'll agree that adding this kind of feature could become a great way to both make the game playable for normal people, while allowing a certain number of players to choose to have the gameplay experience only they can enjoy.

- First, it will take up one equipment slot, reducing number of useful equipment you can install in your ship. Of course, the most hardcore players may choose to install several of these devices for added "difficulty".
- The device itself will be very heavy, reducing your maneuverability and jump range.
- It will consume a lot of energy, leaving less power available for your weapons and shields.
- All this consumed energy will of course produce a lot of heat - not only making it easier for your ship to be damaged by overheating, but also increasing your heat signature, making you more visible to pirates and system authority scans.
- The system authority will hate the hell out of you. Even if you just saved the world, or them personally, one stray shot - and you'll be marked "wanted" with a huge fine to pay for clearing the wanted status.
- You willl have to travel for at least 5 minutes in supercruise to an outpost or a station to pay this fine.
- While in supercruise, "SLOW DOWN" will be displayed at random times, but always later than it should have been displayed.
- The "trading data" most of the time will be completely random. Sometimes though, it will show the correct data, but only to confuse you.
- All USS-es you visit will be completely useless - weddings/funerals, etc.
- All missions you take will:
- require you to visit at least 20 USS-es,
- one of them always being a counter-offer,
- that will be automatically considered as accepted,
- and erase all your previous mission progress,
- also promise to have a much higher reward, but actually give you like 117 Cr when you complete the mission.
- And of course, the most important feature of the device: sometimes, without any reason or any warning, the device will blow up your ship, destroying you and your precious cargo.
I'm sure this kind of thing is going to be very easy to add, because most of these features are already implemented in the game.
