I saw this the other day and jumped on the limited $10 pledge for the full game.

It does look pretty cool.

I have the same thoughts. I'm going to ask the developers. I guess the planet management is on a small scale to make it more manageable once you start to populate other planets but I'll ask.

Edit: Here's the answer:

"@Philip Coutts It is definitely not the final size. Mother Planet will undergo more than a few makeovers before the end, I'm sure. Other planets will then come in varying shapes and sizes."

As my wife would tell me "size isn't everything"....
