The viability of snub fighters as pirate vessels.

I've decided that this save, I'm going to out-&-out refuse to fly a ship that has more than one seat. Just a little RP quirk to make things more fun.

In essence, this means I'll only be flying small fighters. Sidewinder, Eagle, Viper.

The thing about the latter two ships, is that they are in my opinion, capable of light piracy. Precision raids against high value targets, namely, miners.

Another great thing about these ships, is how cheap they are. A brief stint in a nav beacon or Res should give you a re-buy or two. Upgrade costs are ludicrously low too. Data running for criminal factions is a viable activity, expanding the income opportunities. In fact, a Viper Mk III will be able to take the lightest cargo missions, and, in fact, be a survivable trader, or smuggler.

These snub fighters will not be able to fit SRV's, not with full piracy loadouts. But! Frontier have helped my RP game immensely by making pirate skins available for the Hauler! Also a single seat ship. I do steal cargo from the surface, and USS's, so, the Hauler will be able to fulfil that criminal role. But where guns are needed, the snub fighters will do the job. The military slots they have make them quite survivable. An Eagle should easily be able to raid Haulers, both player and NPC, and a Viper be able to take on Type-6's, both player and NPC.

Granted, the range is limited, but that's another benefit of the Hauler. That ship can be used to travel. When the destination is reached, the fighters will be very cheap to have shipped over. While waiting I can use the Hauler to raid a planet and pick up junk of the surface.

I'm confident this way of playing can work, and I look forward to buying a Hauler and Eagle later this week.

Aren't there larger ships with only one chair (visible) like the Federal Guntship? Not really snub fighter but makes a great smuggling ship that can defend itself.

No, the dropship hulls have two seats. The second seat is above, behind and to the left of the helm. Same cockpit layout in the Vulture as well.

As far as I am aware the only non-small ships to have only one seat are the Type-6/7 & Keelback.

OP. Sounds like a plan; it's more hardcore than what I am planning. Next time Elite is on sale, I'm going to buy another account, Tobii Eye 4C and see if I can get to triple Elite using small/medium ships with good all round cockpit visability.

There is also the icourrier as one seater

Shame the Adders a two seater, otherwise it'd be perfect for you.

Been seriously considering the viability of a T6 as a Pve pirate ship with it ultra cool running and decent speed, but what the heck would you fit to those tiny hardpoints?? Lol!

Most cmdrs run (almost) weapon free T9s. Hatchbreakers go right through shields. You can pirate them in a sidey and there is nothing they can do. :)

Oh I hate using hatch breakers.

I prefer using guns to take out shields, drives then hatch, in that order. The cargo just drifts through space ready to scoop.

This method is quite viable in a small fighter, because of the agility.

I highly recommend the viper IV for your purposes. Additionally, the Keelback (for some ungodly reason) only has one seat, fyi.

Except you'll never get through proper shields in time, so its only viable against npcs or as 'begging piracy' versus cmdrs. You wont actually be a threat to a decent trader, more acomical street performer one might reward with a few dimes. And if they wont there is nothing you can do about it.

Real pirates force rewards their way. :)
