Ships The Viper MKIV Owners Club.

Just switched harpoints.
Put medium CG rails and g5 rapid fire frags, corrosive and drag. Bit power issues, but managed to work.
Just now(as I write this) I remembered I have 3a CG pp, will try with that one, has more power than g5 4a armored, monstered(I think)...

Anyway, tried just now against 2 different skilled pvp meta fdl cmdrs.
First fight cca 15min(lost canopy for last 3min), second 10+min, could do more but Champions League finals in a few min(was on 8%hull anyway).

Conclusion : pvp general idea promising, but need intermediate to high pilot skills to be pvp effective.
My skills are under average in PvP, I am mostly lazy g5 fa on PvE pilot, like most of the player base(on ps4)
I managed to land frags, but smalls dont have damage for meta prismatics, and I am noob with rails. Also I was flying 2-2-2 pips, couldn't manage that as well with fa off and trying to not get blasted with those meta PA's.
Mind you I went against cmdrs where fa on is insta rebuy, so I flew fa off and mostly defensive, and these were serious PvP/ganker RP cmdrs.

So this is ship I now choose to git gud in fa off PvP.
With some aim, fa off and pip management skills I plan to learn, I see fun times ahead 😁
Build:
It's usual build, nothing fancy, good for my skills now, but I see some modifications in PvP direction in future

Why not double shot? That's the meta for pacifiers.
Hmm... I can see why RF would be good.
I don't do PP modules.
Frags are gimballed, rapid fire, because of my noob skills against PvP cmdrs. So I at least land some shot(not that that matters).
But build, as it is, is promising base, sturdy, fast, agile enough, so with some skills and modifications, can be real danger.
I yet need to try it on regular Joe in his trading Python or something like that, to see what's the damage on non meta pvp ship. NPC's are not problem.

Well, after looking, you get more DPS with the RF frags, and the reload is a lot shorter.
You should give pacs a try sometime. They are frags with a real tight choke. Go double shot on them - they're awesome. They are large though, so no love on the vipers.

So I had this 4 x Cannon mk IV laying around. Made it for small PvP.
Took it and put two short range small rails on it, one feedback, one super pen. medium cannons are OC, with dispersal and oversized.

Enjoying the rails. Thanks for nudge.

One thing I'll say about Odyssey, it has renewed my love for a ship that I already loved.

The Viper IV is an amazing and versatile little mission runner.

Here's my current build... I still have some legacy mods on there and need to replace/install some specials. But I'm really loving this build.

I was flying an iCourier for the longest time to do Odyssey work but after I went into my exploration Viper IV, I decided to adapt that build for Odyssey. And I am loving it. Easy to set down near anywhere, two dumbfire missile launchers side by side, enough shield and armour to not fall apart with the slightest glance and it's generally a pleasure to fly. Even took out a dangerous Anaconda with it, even though it's not really made for fighting. I suppose a Viper IV is always made for fighting, even when you build it for something else.

The Viper Mk4 is my fav ship for Odyssey thus far. Lands close to everything. The stairs/portal/"beam me up Scotty" is at the front of the ship, which is handy. Plenty of armour for a small ship so some punk NPC with a plasma shotgun can't destroy your ship.

This is my current loadout.
2x SRVs as I tend to lose them a bit. Either needing a quick escape and leaving an SRV behind, or as a cheap early warning for scavengers about ("SRV destroyed" message while I'm occupied taking everything not nailed down).

So after a year and half long break I am returning to Elite. I have cleared my save and created a new CMDR, I am wondering what the best engineering for the Viper MK4's core internals would be. My original CMDR was an explorer but this time I was looking to do bounty hunting this time around. Any advice on engineering would be greatly appreciated by this combat newbie.

Fly Safe CMDR's o7

Thrusters - dirty tuning + drag drive. Pretty much essential engineering for a combat ship. The V4 is not the most maneuverable ship.
Power Distro - charge enhanced + super conduits. Pretty much essential engineering for a combat ship.
Life Support - lightweight (G3 on D-rated is ample)
Sensors - long range on D-rated
FSD - increased range + mass manager. Kinda standard, although some like deep charge experimental
Power Plant - armoured + thermal spread is pretty common. Really depends on your power demand, so kinda the last one to nail down.
Bulkheads - perhaps lightweight or heavy duty (+ deep plating) on Reactive Composites

That should take care of your core internals. Its a pretty long engineering grind list. Just getting G3 DD thrusters from Felicity will be a big difference.
The rest is guns, shield and armour. Aim for balanced resistances in both shields and armour if you're doing PVE.

This is my viper mkIV, for fooling around in open. Think I'll go for lightweight reactives, now it's hd dp, for some more speed

Edit:... Or not, it's only 3m/s difference
