the viper

Similar opinion to ZeeWolf, Viper is the ship I am sticking with at the moment, playing around with combat, rather than rushing off to the anaconda like everyone else seems to be doing.

Although I don't really understand why anyone would stick with the Viper and not sure what differentiates it from the cobra. The Cobra III does exactly the same, but with a much much larger hold so can make more cash with trading. The price difference between the cobra and viper is 1 or two cargo runs in a hauler.

Sentimentality is causing me to stick with it (and novelty), as it was my ship on Frontier Elite 2 (with modified cargo hold).

Thanks guys. I'm liking trading so I think i'll go for the cobra.
When I turn my attention to combat missions, however, I will buy a viper :D

Thanks again.

Scruff out.

Right now I am testing the Viper.
While she has just half the cargo of a Hauler, she has a vastly greater jump distance and her boost with 4 pips caps out at 500m/s. So right now I'm playing International FedEx through the stations BBS.
First time docking a Viper after puttering around in a Hauler is an eyeopening experience. At least I didn't crash. It is simply a much more nimble and faster ship, should also run circles around a Cobra, but I haven't had time to put her through combat (going to install a good combat setup and then lots'a'credits for insurance).

Just got mine. My god it's fast! And feeling of liberation seeing all those jump routes go blue is great. I'd been doing a three jump route between Aulin and Opala in a fully laden Hauler, now it's a single jump

But what I really, really like is the engine sounds. The thing sounds like an utter beast! :D

A clunky beast tho'. As much as I love the sound, if I heard those clunks and groans and pangs in my car, I'd bring it to the next mechanic.

Heh! Yeah, it likes to creak and groan :)

Jump range is deteriorating as I weaponise it too. Ah well, good while it lasted.

Does anyone know the cargo capacity of a viper?

Plus what are they like? Do they excel in any particular area?

-8 tons cargo
-2 class 2 mounts below the nose
-2 class 4 mounts on top
-tendency to overheat
-agility about the same as a sidewinder (pretty good that is)
-top speed 300, 500 boosted (very fast indeed!)

Coming from the other ships it feels "slippery". It's probably an effect of the high speed: even with flight assist it tends to drift quite a bit in sharp turns which feels a bit odd at first.

To cope with the heat, and still be able to boost now and then, you probably want to steer clear of beam lasers completely, and use only 2 energy weapons, pairing them up with something like multicannons. I used 2 c2 burst lasers and 2 c3 gimbal mutli cannons which worked a charm. Great damage output and very manageable heat levels.

The low power drain on my setup meant I rarely used more than 1 or 2 pips in weapons, and so could keep the engines at a high power setting to make proper use of the ship's speed and maneuverability. Should you start taking a lot of fire, the top speed allows you to disengage at your leisure to either escape or just hang back and recharge your shields.

Jump range is pretty crap even without cargo, but assuming you buy it around Eranin and I Bootis, you will have 10 or so systems you can access.

And oh yea, the engines sounds so good... The engine roars, groans, snaps and crackles. The closest sound I have heard is this thing taking off: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnoNITE-CLc around 1:50.

I'm building up some cash with the Cobra but I'll trade down to a Viper later and see if that helps me in combat.

Finding the Cobra a little heavy in dogfights.
