The walk.

Now before I begin I have to make this implicitly clear. I am in no way bashing anything FD is doing, I am just asking for clarification and solid accurate information along with stating my own opnions and suggestions. with that being said I must say the following;

I love the direction this game has taken and I have great respect for all the hard work everyone has put into E: D and I look forward to the next patch as I'm sure many others are, but I have one small request.

I fly a new anaconda and I'm currently on my way to beagle point, and I would love to get up and stretch my legs!

Ive heard that the ability to walk around our ships will come in season 3 and that's all fine and dandy with so much time left in the current season but my request/suggestion is one many others I've seen have as well.

Can we please for the love of God at least be given the ability to walk around our flight decks while we wait for the full release of what ever season will allow us to see the entire ships insides!? It doesn't have to be perfect, we don't need any special or fancy interactions just the ability to get out of our seats and walk around. Perhaps when walking up to a closed door that could be another trigger to teleport us to our srv's. Or an observation deck if there is one.
I think it would also add an awesome addition to multicrew so you could have huddles on the deck and chat facw to face before going to your seats.

From a marketing perspective it could also be used as a teaser so others would be driven to buy the next season to fully unlock the ability to see their ship inside (and maybe out if eva's would be happening?)
I for one can't wait to be able to walk down to my srv when im out exploring, or cargo areas to check out my hauls when trading but I know that will come in due time.

And my one final question is quite simple. Will we always be restricted to planet side transportation with wheels? I'd love to have a small craft to fly around above water, lava, canyons, or anything else for that matter.

Cheers and fly safe.

When we will walk is pure speculation, however we can guesstimate that it will start in S3. I don't want to list all the evidence here, there are many threads regarding this on this forum.

To @OP,

They can't just make it very simple, you need a VR HMD to get the very simple walk around experience. FD will not do something unless its ready for release. The spaceleg DLC have a huge potential from a marketing POV, they will use that to the maximum as they should.

Concerning movement that will close the circle, fly, drive, walk. if you look at the concept art, you will see how they imagined it will work. If I was asked, my guess would be like in ADRIFT.

That wouldn't be fair to everyone else that doesn't have vr tho. All they would have to do with control is add another column just like they did with the srv in the settings menu. And by very simple I mean not have any interactions except with your seats and a door (if that)

I may be wrong on this, but I got the impression that much of the internal modelling for the ships is already done. You get a partial sense for this if the debug camera accidentally clips inside a ship: many of the bulkheads are transparent but a few have textures that you wouldn't expect to see on a basic structural model.

So I don't think it's a case of "write the first-person code, lock the player to the cockpit where the assets are already done, then slowly work on the rest of the assets." I suspect the bulk of the assets are already done, so once we get to walking* around in ships, it'll be every part of the ship at once.

A lot of this is based on old dev diaries and vaguely remembered forum quotes though, so a large pinch of salt may be required...
*FWIW I hope it's a combination of floating and magnetic boots for that truly zero-G feel. I certainly hope it's better than what I've seen in the Star Citizen videos, which are visually OK but just give the impression of being in a full gravity field all the time including head-bob. I'm hoping more for something like this (the movement, not necessarily the combat. Or indeed the script!)
There are some old rift videos showing the bridge clearly unfinished (One sided polygons on models, low-res textures etc.) Some of the newer ones show that a lot of extra work has gone into them, so work is definitely progressing in that direction.

I heard the same thing as well in regards to the level of completion inside and it's wonderful news if it's true but my only reason for wanting access to the bridges alone is because not only would it give us the players an awesome feel of what's to come but also it may help FD to work out any bugs they might hear about or notice from the trial instead of releasing full interiors filled with bugs.

What you remember is way back when they said they were planning for the internals and did very rough white boxing on these when the ships were made to make sure things will fit further down the line. I very much doubt that "much of the internal modelling for the ships are already done". I DO think that they have plenty of people working on the internals at the moment though.

We must also keep in mind the modular aspect of all our ships. It's not just a matter of modelling fixed internals. Instead I guess each ship has a internal framework with corridors that connects different "slots" together. Then depending on what you have installed in your ship these will be populated accordingly.

As for the OP...I don't expect to see any ability to walk around this season. IMO this is what next season will use as the major selling point. Just as they used the Kennedy speech for Horizons PR they could use "That's one small step..." for Season 3. If we already have the ability to take that step that would take some of the punch out of marketing and "the big reveal".

I'm of the opinion that most of the rift / give owners will be more technically minded and "pioneering" in spirit since they are by definition early adopters. Moreover, they are likely the sort of people that are very used to rifling through online information for fixes, formal or otherwise, and eking out the max perf. from their hardware. These are the sort of people you want to test stuff without freezing in panic and writing OMGthisSuxx0rz on every forum. Let these guys wander around inside the cockpits at least. Even if it's "debug camera" like disembodied floating. It will give the Devs a headstart with critical art asset bugs and the like before it goes mainstream.

It doesnt work that way. Its not that they work on one room, then add others etc. They need to make the system itself work, which'll be 90% of the work. If S3 is walking, they will have some functionality ready for 3.0, probably shipwalking (maybe even a limitd form). There is just no way they can release functioning walking in S2, even if it is very limited.

Why not? Surely segments are easier and more efficient to build then everything at once? I know it is when it comes to physical fabrication, but in all reality when it comes to section by section they already have. Cockpits are an internal compartment and they're completed. If what you were saying was indeed how they were working then the completion of cockpits would have meant that the rest of the interiors were done as well lol

I understand what your saying about the "first step" now, it's just unfortunate because I guess my point of view is a little more obscure now, normally I test something before I buy it and that goes very specifically to games among other irl decisions.

As for the modular design inside the ships I get it completely but it's for that reason why the walking ability "teaser" I mentioned would weigh on my decision to purchase s3. Knowing the depth of the things I could explore on my ship now that I can walk around is a huge selling point for me lol but then again I can be a bit narrow minded sometimes :p

You're looking at it the wrong way. Walking is the difficult part, adding rooms is easy.

I'll admit to being a little wary about Walking in Space. I like some of the specific set-ups people have suggested elsewhere - like interactive Bars at the station, or maybe EVA repairs or activities.

But I'm not sure I'll prefer a full-on go-anywhere model like Star Citizen. FPS games are tiring! (And it WOULD have to be FPS, 3rd-person in Elite would be like...I dunno, wrong)

It will be all in the implementation for it to work for me

I'll try again: ship walking is not 'creating a 3d space and move a camera through it'. What you're asking is the equivalent of asking a year ago if you cant 'land on just a small part of a planet'. You need all the mechanics of gameplay to be finished for that.

No 3rd person in Elite, that is not how they want the game to be. For that you will need Star Citizen. Think of it as DayZ in Veteran / hard core mode.

That's why I mentioned Adrift as an example.

It is a far cry from the ships in Star Citizen which come completely modelled. Scott Manley was showing some of the detail visible by clipping the camera through the hull of a t9 sized ship.
So far we did not even get unique cockpits for the ships expansion. If there are like you say plenty of people working on the internals they have kept it secret very well. The modularity btw should not be much
of an issue as the way Mr Braben described it there will be an elevator at the back of the cockpit to take you to the different rooms in the ship. Also what would there be to do? Combat does not take long
enough to allow a walk through the ship to put out fires, repairs maybe? there is a repair module. It is an exciting idea but not a simple one to implement.

Great video link!

hehe at 4.25 he talks about walking around stations and hiding in the cargo of someone loading gold onto their ship.. You board it, shoot the pilot in the head, and you got yourself a shiny new Cutter! Oh that would so royally P!$$ off anyone! Scary!

In a q&a they said s2 would be non-atmo landing and s3 would be walking. That was years ago, but as S2 indeed went according to plan and they are creating avatar/npc creators/generators, it does seem plausible.

Putting aside technical development for a moment, FD won't want to add the ability to walk around on its own - they will want to add some gameplay. There's no point having the ability to walk/float around your flightdeck (never mind a starport/planet) if you can't do anything. Sure the gameplay might be simplistic but there will be associated gameplay nonetheless otherwise it will just be a glorified debug camera.

I think there's a chance what OP asks for will be in the multi crew patch. I wouldn't hold your breath tho

It won't be in 2.3. But seeing as they are adding the commander creator in 2.3 then it's reasonable to assume walking around probably won't be too far in the future.
