The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt

I agree...it's amazing! Played it pretty much nonstop yesterday as soon as I had time to do so. :)

Don't really know about "downgraded graphics"...a max settings it looks spectacular IMO!

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Is it different or improved a lot from the first two? How comparable is it? I ask since I played a bit of 1 and 2 but could never bring myself to complete them. Just wondered if 3 brings some new stuff to the table beyond just purdy graphics. (Not trying to slam it - I like purdy graphics. Just curious). :)

It's a lot more free form when it comes to exploring the world (and its HUGE). The previous games were a lot more linear and "level/area" based. I felt the same thing about the previous games even if I did finish Witcher 1 (2 never gripped hold of me), but this game I haven't been able to stop playing. It's actually just paused right now...been playing it in between other things today and never closed it down. As soon as the kids have been put to bed I'm heading back in again! :)

Honestly do not want FD to release Powerplay before/during the weekend...that would cause some serious conflicting emotions!! :D

The graphics are very much dumbed down..... Such a disappoitnment.
Here's the response from CD Project Red:

Am I right in saying it's around 25GB or so? *looks at his tiny SSD*

Yes, it's about that size. I wouldn't worry about installing it on a disk drive though, more time to read the hints during loading. :)

Not just his weekend, the entire next 3 months! To be honest, both Elite and The Witcher are games which rely on atmosphere. In Elite you feel like you're inside a spaceship, in The Witcher you feel like you're in 15th century Eastern Europe. It even has beard growth for crying out loud! The experience from either game is that much nicer the more you let yourself immersed in whichever universe the game projects. Personally I can't be switching between SciFi and medieval all the time, I'll have to commit to one of them or risk losing the enjoyment of both...

What to do... This is a real first world problem...

In any case, if anyone is wondering, I managed to play the first 30 minutes of the Witcher 3 on my decrepit GTX460, with a mixture of low, medium and high settings. Didn't reach any big city yet, but by the looks of it the game will be playable even on cards under the minimum requirements.

Geez, that is some big difference! I remember seeing the original trailer, or some form of it, and thinking "wow". The new visuals look decidedly ordinary. Not saying the game isn't any good (as it seems to be reviewed quite highly) but I won't be buying it now for 2 reasons - the lacklustre graphics and the lacklustre control mechanism for the PC (I read a review criticising it, correct me if it's wrong).

You're probably right about the game's mechanism isn't made primarily for PC.

Here's another short explanation from the CD Project devs...

http://www.pcgamer.com/cd-projekt-addresses-witcher-3-graphical-downgrade-complaints/

"He also said that suggestions that the PC version of the game was held back by the console editions is accurate, but only to a point: Without the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 releases, he continued, The Witcher 3 as it is wouldn't exist on any platform, because the studio simply couldn't afford to make a game of this scale exclusive to the PC."

So there you have it.

I have question commanders - what exactly makes Witcher games so popular?
I never played any Witcher game, never read the books but I know how much everybody are hyped about the new W3. What is so great about it?

I really like the look of this, but never played the originals.

I dont like games that are mainly cutscenes though and according to a reddit post I read, this one is. :(

I got this for free when I purchased my Asus Strix GTX980
Downloaded and gave it a go, was thoroughly disapointed with how it looks compared to what we were shown it would look like.
The controls are clunky.
Might as well pay and get it on console, it will look the same thanks to the watered down graphics, and the control method will be better.
Even with ultra settings its disapointing.

It isn't...unless you only go though the main quests without doing anything else I guess, but then you would miss out on 80-90% of the game so...

As for graphics being watered down as mentioned in this thread. This is what they've said recently:

“If you’re looking at the development process, we do a certain build for a tradeshow and you pack it, it works, it looks amazing. And you are extremely far away from completing the game. Then you put it in the open-world, regardless of the platform, and it’s like ‘oh , it doesn’t really work’. We’ve already showed it, now we have to make it work. And then we try to make it work on a huge scale. This is the nature of games development.”

I think people sometimes are somewhat overestimating what computers can realistically achieve...especially in open world games like this where everything need to be able to stream in more or less instantly in the background.

This is by no means a "ugly" game...it's one of the better looking ones out there and for a open world game it's state of the art IMO.

At the end of the day the graphics doesn't really matter that much anyway as long as the game is good.

Yes they do, when they looked "wow" and now look "meh, seen it all before". That, and the control scheme being borked for PC, are the reasons I'm not buying it so clearly these things do matter to some of us. :)

Same old story with games that are heavily marketed on console. Look at the difference with elite from the alpha screenshots to what we have now :)

Umm, Actually; the graphics do matter. The better details and realism, the better immersion. At least that's the case for me.
And crippling the graphics on the pc version for the sake of the consoles? oh, that's not good at all in my book; that is getting me into boycott mode out of principles.
Although I do get that they had to develop the game for the biggest possible market to afford the production, seeing those screenshots up here really deflated my interest in W3; before that I was set on buying it for this weekend, but now I will definitely not.

It is my hope that the pc version will get its graphics update in not too long, and I will be picking up the game at that point.
This Gamespot article featuring an interview with CD Projekt Red co-founder Marcin Iwinski suggests as much:

Finally, CD Projekt Red says there is a major patch coming soon to The Witcher 3 that should offer a series of graphical improvements. For the PC edition specifically, another new patch will allow players to edit .ini files. This should let players tweak their visual settings even more than they already can.
