The World of Death breaths new life into ED

This was my 2nd visit to SPOIHAAE XE-X D2-9, a system containing a White Dwarf and a planet which is right next door. I'm by no means the first to discover this system, or take videos of it. Credit goes to those brave Commanders who have boldly gone where I've just visited recently.

The first time I visited, I kinda....well, died on take off. My poor ship was in a hazardous environment (inside the jet cone), so when I attempted to take off.....I landed soon after. In hot pieces. Not even my Grade 5 Clean Drives could save me.

And the White Dwarf laughed, claiming another death.

So, I re-brought my DBX (Venture) and jumped right back into the System of Death.

The orbit of the sole planet is so close, and so fast, I had to wait until the poor, well baked planet was outside the jet cone of the White Dwarf. I had to pop off a couple of heat sinks just to land, but, I made it:

Once down, I was aware of the sun about to set:

So off I went to get some materials, because, that's what you do on the surface on a planet which is trying to kill you. During which time, I experienced a sensation I hadn't realised in this game for months - fear. Would I die on this barren rock, again?

A trio of outcrops gave me a generous helping of stuff. I went back to the ship and OhMyGawd! The sun is coming up already! This should be worth recording. Get the suncream out folks, along with any clothes you need to put on the line, because its getting hot out there!

I went back to the ship, confident I was outside the jet cone and it was safe to take off. But I wasn't outside the exclusion zone of the White Dwarf!

Luckily, the game bounced me out of that zone, just in time for me to see this:

Its times like this that remind me why I play this game, despite the bugs, the quirks and the ''Seriously FD?!?' moments of gameplay. And why I'm hoping for exploration to get the sweet loving it deserves in Q4.

Keep meaning to visit this system, been waiting for an exploration update first. Roll on Q4.

Nice pics, thanks for reminding me about this gem. To think there must be millions out there not discovered yet.

Very cool indeed :cool:

It IS about those moments, isn't it?

Yep, loved it. The best gameplay I'd had from ED for months. Beats Guardian-Tech grinding or waiting for decent targets to show up in a HazRes. My personal goal last night was to land, grab materials and take off. The game kinda cheated for me on the last part, so I will be going back soon.

If only there was a station in that system, I'd move there.

I’m afraid to ask, but how far is this system away from the Bubble? I’m guessing many thousands of light years.

I'm based in Colonia these days and I was looking for somewhere interesting to go nearby, World of Death was only 10 jumps away in my engineered, guardian-powered DBX. I really hope places like this are in the forthcoming Codex for new and existing players to become aware of.

Figures. I hated the trip out that way so much the first time that I’ll likely never go back. It was in a fully laden Cutter, though.

You could go on the Neutron Highway:

And stop off for repairs and refreshments via the Colonia Connection Highway:

At least, that's what I did. I added a Guardian FSD booster to my DBX and I was doing 270Ly jumps after sipping on Neutron juice :D.

Just 602Ly from the Magellan system in Colonia.

Being out here makes the bubble look boring. Its a great operating base for explorers.

Oh no doubt, unfortunately for me I like exploring and literally everything else. So Im going to have to pass.

I don’t get this. How do people get such huge jumps with neutron stars? The few times I’ve tried it I get like, 25% more range, which actually ADDS to my travel time because now I have to re-plot one jump on the galaxy map to take advantage of the increased range. Sometimes there’s not even a star in the sweet spot, so I only end up with a couple extra LY. Not to mention the time it takes to fly through the jet cone in supercruise. By the time all is said and done I could have traveled twice as far by just ignoring the neutron star.

Because your using a White Dwarf

That's because you haven't done it with a neutron star, you've done it with a white dwarf which does in fact give a 25% boost rather than the 300% boost that a neutron star gives.

Top = neutron star

Bottom = white dwarf

You can also identify them by the cunning method of looking at the galmap, where a neutron star is shown as 'neutron star' and a white dwarf is shown as... well you get the idea :p

I am 500 hours into Elite and this is the first time I realized there was a difference between neutrons and white dwarfs. Wow. I feel pretty dumb. Also, Elite Dangerous is awesome.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
You'd think that the shield manufacturers in the Elite-universe would start taking a cue from whomever it is designing the radiation shielding for these ships and incorporate whatever magic tech *that* is. I mean, c'mon... you can survive fuel scooping in a neutron star's 'radiation cone of death' but you can get fried by some NPC pirate's cut-rate pulse laser? :p

Nice pics, tho, OP. ;)
