Elite / Frontier The wormhole is back...

...well sort of. I made a cheat in BUFFET to allow you to travel anywhere in the galaxy almost instantly with just 1t of fuel.

BUFFET is coming, honest! There's just a couple of annoying bugs I need to iron out and we're done. I know I promised it a while back but I hope the extra time I spent polishing it up will be worth it.

Ok, good luck with eradicating the last few bugs :)

Thanks, I'm nearly done. Just finished updating the readme as well. Now it's time to find some webspace to upload it to.

I have even bigger plans for JJFFE and BUFFET once I've released BUFFET2, but I need to learn more about networking... ;)

Eh... multiplayer FFE?

i didn't find no words to express.......

btw, geraldine did you know parts of the amiga keyboard you'll find used for the cockpit of my viper.

You could upload to the Space Sim Central Whertz, http://www.spacesimcentral.com/portal.php

They even have a FFE3D section. Networking? A multiplayer FFE3D?? What are you up to Whertz? :D

Thanks Geraldine, I will probably upload it there.

I've been thinking about multiplayer FFE since first creating BUFFET, and now I understand a lot more about FFE's memory area, maybe it is possible. As for FFED3D, it wouldn't matter what version you use, even JJFFE would work as I never change anything in the program, BUFFET only ever manipulates the memory area of FFE.

I've not attempted anything by the way, I'm just thinking at the moment. Here's what I'm thinking:

Set up a server for people to connect to using BUFFET.
Transmit user's ship data and position to the server.
Send connected users' ship data to other users on the network.
BUFFET can inject a ship into FFE's object array and move it with data sent from the server.

Realistically this would be quite a big project, and it wouldn't be perfect. For a start, everyone would have to have the exact same time and date in FFE, the server would need to send the correct time and date to everyone and BUFFET would have to set the time and date for each user's FFE so planets and starports would be in the same place for everyone.

But, I'm also thinking of something else. This would be easier and definately possible. How about we just populate the galaxy with real people? I remember a long time ago playing Noctis and someone made a utility to track people across the galaxy. I could have BUFFET send people's location in the galaxy to a server, and you would see who is in your system on BUFFET's ship list (which is already in the new version). No point really, just to see who is in the same system as you. You could even chat and follow people around the galaxy.

There is one more thing I'm working on in BUFFET, but you will have to wait...

It would actually be pretty easy to meet up with people by arrangement. As long as commanders keep regular saves - perhaps a month apart, then they can meet up with anyone at any time..

One player (the one who is earliest in the time line) suggests a date, time and place. The other player/s load a save of theirs from just before this date. They skip as much time as neccesary to bring them to the target date, and meet up with the original player.

Whertz

Nice project you are working on for FFED3D. You can upload BUFFET here to SSC's FFED3D download area: http://www.spacesimcentral.com/downloads.php?cat=37

If I remember my security missions correctly people that upload files can edit there own files, so you should be able to just overwrite the download as you upgrade the program.

You will have to register to upload btw.

Thanks, I registered on ssc so I can upload there. BTW, I'm not working on any of this at the moment, and it is NOT ffed3d specific (BUFFET works with everything), just thinking about what to do in the future for BUFFET.

good idea :)
but definatly i would like to see the wormhole back in ffe, because i liked it's limitations (instand hyperspace i did in fe2 allready, it's not the same) you had to calculate (use a little helper) the intermediate jumps (write some notes, again) and it is not possible to "follow" any ship via this shortcut, it makes the bug to a part of the game instead of a simple "i can do/go everything/everywhere" despite of that it's a cool thing, i can go any place i was maybe make a cool pic and don't have to play actually (to get to sector -2456, 345) ;)

for the interested ones who want to do some easy ram edits for fe2
i recommend gamewizard gw32 you can save the offset tables for each process (game) but to make it work really you have to setup afterwards the offsets manual, but if you once found out how it works, it can be very handy for many games. you can search for known hex/dec and unknown values (ascending/descending). be shure to start the game and prog in the same manner and don't have to many other tasks to ensure the same offsets in ram.

btw, i would wish for a future release of a elite more manual navigation (maybe even for next jump so misjumps are your own fault), optional of course but i think some would like it.

buffet do you think that there is a possibility to change the behave of hull damage. because long ago when my friend (jürgen) and me start to play frontier, soon he argued "it's somewhat unrealistic to shoot down a ship to 0% hull mass before it explodes", i said "yes, but just imagine it represents 0% to a critical % of hull mass" (even if shipyards roster will tell you the full amount of tonnes for % of hull mass). then we start to imagine how a ship would look with only 1% of hull left, only the pilots seat? :D
of course i know, if critical tonnes of hull mass damage gets changed, all weapons have to be less devastating. 30% imo would be a "realistic" value for a critical hull mass.
even to "cheat" only the value represented in "view" for your ship and selected target would help to make it at least look better (real amount of tonnes don't changes, no change to weapons).

i know it's only "cosmetic", but i would appreciate it much.

yet another question,
is it really impossible to move completly "instant" to a new system? (without jump)
if it's so ok, i never found out how to do so. ;)
or would it be enough to change the status? (maybe twice?)

I don't think you can move instantly to a new system. FFE generates planets, starports and AI ships etc. after you enter the system. So moving by any other means than jumping would not initialise these new variables. My wormhole cheat is okay though, there is no limit to where you can go and it is almost instant!

I know it'll probably be unpopular, but wouldn't it be simpler just to disable the "galactic clock" in multiplayer mode, and instead have the server determine where ships, planets, & bases are in the systems that currently have active players?

That's something I wondered myself, It could be used in games without any time dependant missions (at least ones with a date) or you could have a timescale set in hours. but how would it affect hyperspace jumping?
