As some people here know, I help run the YakYak forum for legendary game developer Jeff (Yak) Minter who is also an Elite: Dangerous backer.
Now, he's a backer at the standard beta level and had an X52 on order from a company that shall not be named for months with no sign of it ever arriving. So when the single player scenarios were given out to beta players he had no stick to play with.
Because of this lack of stick he had to learn to fly with keyboard/mouse, and held off using his development Oculus Rift (basically a DK1 with a 1080p screen) until a HOTAS could be acquired. Last I heard he had got as far as taking down the Anaconda successfully in Supply Strike...
Yesterday he finally took delivery of an X52 from a company in Germany and took the game for a spin in the rift last night. I'll quote his comment verbatim below (so don't blame me for any swears):
