Horizons The Zaphod Hawke Epiphany

I have been enjoying the latest bounty hunting community goal with friends and with new friends I have met in open. Most of my haz res fun was in my corvette, and I decided to take a break and pull out a modestly engineered eagle to do some more bounty hunting in open.

I met some folks that were new to the game and we had a great time in a very disorganized wing.

This morning I popped on to drive my eagle back to the station and cash in a few million, and I noticed a commander icon close to the station while I was in supercruise. It is commander Zaphod Hawke. I know nothing about him and I continue to approach the station.
Yes, I could have dropped down and flipped to PG or Solo, yes I could have tabbed onto and hi-lighted another system for a quick exit - no I did not do that.

Zaphod interdicts me (modded FAS advanced plasma accelerator build with thermal upgrades), I submit and boost - doing about 440 m/s (nothing I know) and Zaphod attacks. I'm clean with crimes against me listed as on. He is wanted. I'm juking (not doing the appropriate spiral of course), and he is easily keeping up with me - pretty sure those are level 5 DD's on him. I escape once, (silly me I did not hi-wake), and he grabs me again. I try to drag him into the feeble security forces to buy a sec (now I have another sytem highlighted), but my modules are damaged and I can't hi-wake. I type "gg" because I know he's got me. He's a better pilot, and in a vastly superior ship. I reboot my systems to try to repair, but I know that reincarnation is on its way. I sent him a friend request, he declined.

Zaphod Hawke did NOTHING WRONG. He played the game fairly and according to the rules. He destroyed my ship because he wanted to destroy my ship. There is NOTHING WRONG with his personal psychology or target selection. I did NOT combat log.

The one thing that troubled me about the encounter was the game rules about the encounter. I don't need any personal compensation from Zaphod, or break on the rebuy cost - that's silly, he killed me fair and square. I do however, feel that he's still chilling in the system waiting to snare other folks without any meaningful game rule-based consequence.

I am aware that a karma system is in the works and I think it makes sense that laws against crimes should have meaningful consequences for players. Through recruiting other players, purchasing the game for family members, and picking up in-game and out of game swag I think I've spent over 300$. I think I'll hold off sharing any more of my wealth with FDEV until they get that karma thing up and running. Not because Zaphod Hawke is bad, but because the game will feel broken to me until this flaw is addressed.

Empathetic Hawke Victim

This must be all this guy does. He got me too as i was trying to deliver on a Community Goal. I would love to post a bounty on him.

I have only been playing for a week. It is nice to know i am not alone but it is difficult to accept that there is no consequence to his actions.

so no piracy, powerplay or even bounty hunting reason? just killing for the sake of killing???
that's cool....hope that karma thing gets sorted soon and you get shadow banned for 6 months.
meanwhile I'll add you to my in game and forum ignore list.

now if only FD would include a feature to easily export and import ban lists we could sort out a community karma system.

Hi Zaphod, good to see you again. Like I said, I have no animus for you - and you're right an eagle is a trivial loss. I think you're sort of missing the point. You could have popped any of my ships and I'd feel the same way. Shoot, if we were playing any fps I'd be downright puzzled if you didn't kill me on sight. It's clear that's how you approach this game and that's totally cool. We might have different expectations for the game, and it's pretty clear mine fall more along the pve rp lines. I don't think you're really saying I should pay for a game I don't want to play right? That wouldn't really make sense.

Good hunting Zaphod - whether or not Karma is coming, you may be blocked by anyone that sees you in the same instance. I haven't blocked you - but I guess I could since it is playing by the rules right?

Ok, so i get NPC pirates attacking me for 1 ton of cargo, which in my mind is pointless thievery, and they are way to easy to kill unless in large groups.
So I think Zaphod is just being a more dangerous version of them.
My galaxy needs bad people.
Thank you Zaphod for being a dangerous bad person.
If I ever see you I will run away screaming like a little girl and i will be having a great time.
Thank you again for making my game better.

I don't make a habit of screaming, but I do have to run away regularly.

Cheers
Me and my group scream and run away as a rule. Scary games are cool when you play them by yourself, but magic happens when you have other real people screaming around you and panic takes over. We love the rush and play other games like Arma 3 just like this aswell.

Hey Zaphod,

Since you're watching this thread, I'll ask here. I ran across your dual-PA Vulture in my Keelback.

Are there any tactics I could use that would be effective? Really realizing I have no good answer for Plasma, especially the one that makes you break lock. My ship is too big / slow to dodge, and too small to tank.

Trying to figure out what CMDR-piloted ships & loadouts are *not* so overwhelmingly powerful that I can be competitive with the right tactics, and without a super-specialized loadout.

don't count too much on that.

you already paid. so in the meantime you could fly solo, private group, in open with friends, or as you were but without making *all* possible mistakes, those you just described ;-)

the main downside of plasmas is that it's hard to hit with them, but if you cannot dodge then there's not much you can do except run, or hit harder in return. i assume that if dodging is not an option, outmaneuvering isn't either.

other than that, they deal absolute damage so shield capacity and armor would be more important than resistances, however as you say that's quite specific.

and fixed weapons in general are good against lock break, silent running or chaff. again, maybe not the best choice for a keelback, but doable.

i would keep practicing dodging. :)

Yes - I am combat Elite - but you know that doesn't really mean anything when my kills are all npc's right ? My point about game purchases is not really limited to cosmetics items. It applies to future seasons, and any of my other contacts that I might recommend the game to. I've been pirated (it was actually pretty fun), invited to duel (which is fun too), and flat out popped while flying starter ships (not so much fun). All of that doesn't really matter though. I am looking for something a bit more like a PVE mmo in a sci fi context - as the folks in my gaming community are (we're a bunch of old scientists and engineers). I've played pvp survival games myself, and in that context they are truly fun. So for myself, and those that I recommend games to, Elite (and purchases related to Elite) place me in the "Do Not Buy" camp at the moment. I really do appreciate your civility and candor. Good luck out there Zaphod.

What did you expected? That he gets banned from the system? Wouldn't be fair in my opinion.
I'm killing regular any Aisling BGS trooper or Aisling's Angels when i spot them in our systems. They are clean but they work against our playerfaction and so i kill them. Yes i'm a murderer than but my faction still loves me for doing so :D
That's why they always fly in private since than and hide from open.

Banning someone out of a system because a few murder crimes would break the game IMO. Karma system yes, completely banning someone only if he's going postal (like i'm used to do in communism systems). That's what we already have now. If someone goes beyond a certain ppint, cops become hostile and shoot them on sight and they can not dock at certain stations than.

Everything fine how it is.

Marcus - I agree with your sentiment about purposeful killing. However, there should be purposeful policing. Where would you raise your family, conduct your business, take a vacation? If high security systems are supposed to look anything like 1st world environments in the 33rd century, I think its fair to say there would be more meaningful security and consequences within those environments. We still have wackos and lone wolf predators in modern industrialized environments, but there are meaningful consequences for them. That is not the current state in Elite.

Totally agree! I know EVE online does this well. High security core systems where it is too much trouble for the pirates to operate and then the wild west out in the black where anything goes and you better take a gun!
My hope is that this gets looked at in 3.0.

My group does Power Play raids on Sol https://inara.cz/wing-mission/793/38/ and we get attacked by the authority ships all they time. We go in small cheap ships so we do not stand much of a chance so we always run for it once they show up. Are some Murder Hobos so big and strong that they can fight off endless cops? Or do they run after a bit as well?
If so then is it not working as intended? Would a Pirate like to comment?

Wow Zaphod! You can take on 5 or 10 NPCs at once! You da man!
So what is a typical PvP kill for you? You attack the player and the cops come and get you at the same time? Or are the cops always after you and you have to fit in a kill when/how you can?

Zaphod is an awesome pilot, and the ship he owned me with is truly terrifying. My limited experience with pkr's is that their vessels and strategies are fine tuned beyond belief. The other night I was in a light ship with 800 shields and 1300 armor - 4 aug resist g5 shield boosters. It was literally about 5 seconds before my shields were gone, then containment missile (FSD out), then thrusters out (don't know how - sniping or mines???), then toast. Entire encounter was maybe 15 seconds. I can last for hours in that ship in a haz res. Against someone like Zaphod pphh no time at all. These guys are amazing.

I am sort of feeling like there is a huge core design flaw going on. If you build a trader, res hunter with good sustain, utility ship, explorer, etc. you will ALWAYS lose to a fine tuned assassination machine. It's clear people are playing different games at the same time here. I like open to meet folks and collab. Others like it from a fps survival perspective. I think it's pretty clear the pk'rs have much more freedom, and force their model on anyone they encounter. A trader certainly can't force a pk'r to trade right? So I suggest better C&P and Karma I guess. Sort of feel like blocking is a band-aide.

My prediction is that this won't resolve well until we get a sliding PVE/PVP server system, where PVP is largely open in anarchy, low sec, CG or powerplay faction specific encounters.

You know the reason police seem incompetent is because people like me are building our ships to specifically counter them right?

It's not like someone just happens to be able to tank five or ten NPC's at will.

It is a not entirely rational act of will that enables this kind of display.

Spend an entire weekend grinding out engineering upgrades in one 40 hour session. Then do it three to five more times in subsequent time off from work.

Then you'll get it.

As to the EvE online comparisons being made here?

Apples and oranges.

Concord is the finger of God.

One cannot go against God.

There is no God here priest.

Except maybe DBOBE. Oh, and Sandy the Demiurge.

Triple virtual reps.

First, the guys don't remember the amount of grind one has to go through in order to be a competent bad guy.

Second, EvE police is the hand of God. No one goes against that. Geez.

Finally, the cute dev nicknames.

I fought Zaphod and it was a lot of fun...I got lucky and lag slammed us both into the ground. I ran out of dumbfire missiles so I had to resupply with synthesis (my fixed beam laser wasn't cutting it) and he was a good sport about it and it was a fun dogfight all around even if I got lucky.
