There are no words to describe how bad terrain LOD currently is.

I have seen how good the new stellar forge can be. I have found trailer worthy planets and envirronments. Truly wonderful things.
Even some grey airless worlds can be fascinating, given the right lighting and terrain variation.

But this broken abomination of an LOD system is breaking 90% of the explorable surface of this galaxy.

Allow me a quick example : You may find if you explore a bit, something very nice like those great volcano shaped formations, actually spawning in active volcanic worlds, along with magmatic and crystaline ground POI (loot table still bugged btw) in very nice rendered basaltic terrain. Awesome immersion.

But would you like to get a closer look that things would take a very disappointing look. LOD will randomly render the surrounding terrain with various levels of details, creating the so dreaded pixelated cow pattern and disgusting color matching, such as this :
borked lod.jpg

Which truly is a shame because would you get a bit closer to the grey background and wait for 10 seconds while standing still, LOD may decide it's time to turn on the actual really good looking basaltic rendering of the terrain.

Ultra settings.

I voiced my concerns, good day to you all.

for me the experience is much worse

if I stand still and wait, one minute later (ONE MINUTE, the first capture is before approaching)

Specs : Ryzen 5 2500U, 16Go RAM ddr4 2400MHz, GTX1050 (4Go GDDR5), ssd drive.
1080 MEDIUM settings.

my laptop has gone from 1080 ULTRA at 40 FPS or more in EDH, to 1080 MEDIUM 20FPS or less in EDO.
it is necessary to change equipment

Im still seeing the same planetary texture blending weirdness I saw in 2016.
i7 7800x, 32GB, nvidia 3080 FTW3, SSDs. It isnt the end of the world, but its noteworthy.

Edit: huh, and I keep trying to upload a screenshot of that blending error but the website just vanishes it without any error message. Screenshot uploader having issues?

Size limit, drop it on imgur or steam, or something similar.

Its steam, and I already stripped it down and compressed it. Ive shared many shots here using the same process. When they are too large the site usually provides that error, but this time no error.

Some things are clearly broken. On certain planets. flying over the surface will draw in a sphere of terrain close to you that has a noticeable seam of color/texture than terrain that is farther away. And in general I just don't like how obvious heightmaps are in certain mountains.

You can take the steam cloud storage link and use the insert image/link version to link it. That's what I do :)

One of the strangest situations I've found myself in is climbing down a rocky mountain slope, - just bare rock on an icy world. In a millisecond, - everything is suddently covered in snow. The snow effect shader just didn't load for some reason until a location change or action triggered it. Surreal.

Yeah planet LOD was hit or miss for me, but mostly miss. I'd try descending at a slower speed to give it time, or wait a few moments before going down to the surface to land, but nothing seemed to make any difference.

Sometimes it would load in the correct LOD. Most times it wouldn't.

I wonder if this is tied to other General performance issues, I've seen none of this, and I specifically looked. However my Hardware is firmly mid-range and I'm experiencing zero graphical or performance issues.

IE, wondering if being one of the lucky ones means I miss out on these glitches as well.

...and oh the LOD 'pop-in'.... with my rig I am getting regular and steady 85 +/- 5 FPS.... but the oh so slow, laggy 'pop-in' on planetary approach....AAARRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Elite now has the same issues No Man's Sky had with the pop-in. You're going too fast, all the detail vanishes and only when you stop for a moment it manifests around you. Terrible when you're looking for plants and wonder why you don't find any, then you stop and suddenly a right forest materializes around you. Even if terrain details load in, sometimes they phase out and back in again like Elite had just forgotten for a moment what it was doing.

There's a mod and a config file fix for that btw. I did both and never have that problem anymore.

The better question is why Hello Games havent just implemented both the mod and the config fix into the official code.
