there should be some way to capture and sell ships in the future.

Some way to hack into ships you are fighting at maybe around 10% health that takes a really long time to do but if you do it the ship ejects commander and you acquire the ship.

It would make combat/piracy as profitable as other stuff like trading.

Haha! and the first victim is you! So you have no ship! Honestly, the anti PVP players would have a seizure.

I disagree, or at the very least you would need to have an Anaconda or a HUGE ship to be able to do this. They haven't implemented the ability to have AI copilots or AI ships that fly with you and are by your side (Even though the tech for this obviously is in place, as seen in the tutorials.) If you were able to capture ships with a single module then you would just have to whittle down an anaconda and capture it and suddenly you're 180 million credits ahead of the game. If this was implemented, it'd have to be EXTREMELY difficult, only doable on ships that are of lower quality of yours, and only doable if you have the cargo capacity for an entire ship.

SALVAGE!!!! We need Salvage folks.

I think the OP's idea is great. Shoot out the life support or drives. Mark the ship and come back and see if the pilot ejected, leaving the ship or self destructed and then you can still salvage it for parts and metals.

obviously it would have to be balanced correctly. and I highly doubt smaller ship pilots can get an anaconda down to 10% health. This capture process will have to take a LONG time, maybe similar to raid bosses in mmo's, maybe 30 mins to capture big ships in a large group and almost impossible alone besides capturing smaller ships. Also the prices won't obviously be market prices, you cannot keep the ship because it is always marketed as stolen/wanted and you will have to sell to black market for like a fraction of the cost, maybe 50% less than what its worth.

Just get one of these?

Ship boarding is planned as a future expansion, together with the ability to get up and walk around ships and stations. I imagine if they make it possible to take over ships, those will be "kill on sight" in all regulated space, so not very useful outside piracy. But for pirates? Sweet!

X managed it. And made it suitably tricky (AI pilots weren't guaranteed to eject, and you had to get real close to "claim" the ship).

That'd be the real trick - making it challenging and interesting. Successfully capturing a ship should require specialist equipment, like some sort of EMP device, or even a harpoon missile thingy that would leave the attacker shackled to their target until it was all over.

Maybe even add a limpet-like drone that would target the canopy instead of the cargo hatch, and try to drill the occupant. Though that might be a bit too... gory for Elite.

Too gory for a game world where criminals pretending to be legitimate tourist operators trap and sell hapless passengers for meat and medical experiments?

you are supposed to not die ever technically so I don't think they will put that in the game lol.
