Newcomer / Intro Thermal overload?

Hi guys,

The last two of my ships I have had the thermal overload message when I go to fire my weapons.

Is the power plant too weak or the guns to big? I just can't seem to work it out, any help would be really appreciated, thanks.

Hi, Mick.
Especially lasers produce a lot of heat. And the heat increases exponentially to the speed of draining the WEP energy pool. (As the pool drains, the guns bleed more and more heat into the hull. With empty pool it overheats your ship almost instantly) So it's a good idea to shoot only through the first half of it and then let it recharge and cool down. Also it's best to shoot lasers always with 4 pips in WEP.
Better powerplants have better heat dissipation, so they help, too.

Also you can try a mixed loadout. Especially multicannons are very good. You can shoot them while your WEP is recharging and lasers cooling down.

Then again, it also comes down to a ship you're flying. Fer de Lance, for example doesn't overheat at all, while in an Imperial Eagle you spend most of the time above 100% by default. :D

Multicannons are cool.

Also - putting more pips into weapons lets them fire longer without overheating. Good system management (sys, engines, weapons) makes a massive difference in combat.

Thanks for the tips folks.

I have switched to pulse lasers and they seem better, I also have multicannons but the ship still heats up, although not as quick as it did. It is an Asp explorer and a Viper mark 3.

I've only been playing 3-4 wks so I suppose it is really just getting some experience.

I had only been doing surface missions so never really used my weapons, the fun started when I tried to do some bounty hunting and found my weapons wouldn't fire.

Learning all the time though, enjoying it as well.

Try to use A-rated power plant of highest possible class.
If you still have problems, you can always pack a heatsink launcher.

My Python does this, pretty sure it wasn't this bad a few updates ago having come back to it after a break. I like it, it forces you to balance your loadout and think harder about how you set up/fire the weapons.

A rate your power plant and power distributor and that should help but as others have said you need to manage your firing rate and pips. If you are using beam lasers they heat up very quickly, try pulse or burst as an alternative. Also try going for a more mixed set up. You don't mention your ship but for example on a Viper I always go for 2 lasers and 2 multi-cannons, if you go for 4 lasers you will overheat pretty quickly.

My asp explorer is fitted with 2 small beam lasers, 2 small pulse lasers and 2 medium multi-cannons. Lasers for shields, cannons for hull and I rarely suffer heat problems. I can't recall the ratings of my power plant and distributor but they're less than A grade.

Weapons produce heat, depending on type and how you fire them.
WEP capacitor is basically the cooling system for weapons, if it runs out, you will overheat your weapons and be unable to fire for a time, if you have no pips in WEP, then you won't be able to fire at all until you provide power to the cooling system.
