Thermal Overload...

Hi,

Im about 400ly out of the bubble, thought I would do some mining for mats, worked fine, then I might have overdone the lasering.

Thermal overland. Ok, I've had that before, let the thing cool down and all will be fine again.

So I go fly off a few more ly's, do a scan, find some asteroids to mine.

Get out the mining laser and its all red (ooh err) "thermal overload". Great. Whats wrong.

Switch fire groups to see if I can blast the asteroids (just to test) with pulse lasers, also thermal overload

Now before any smart person goes say power distributor - im only using 88% of my capacity - and thats with EVERYTHING switched on.

So - just in case it was that, I turned everything OFF, including fsd, cargo scoop, the whole lot (except life support of course). No difference.

So not sure whether this is a bug or my mining laser has gone kapput.

I even used the option to reboot/repair and it returned with "0 modules faulty" and still zippo, nadda, nothing.

Im hoping its a ps4 bug that isn't on the PC or Xbone versions as the only things I have been able to find on those searches have been to do with the power distributor.

Btw, my ship is asp explorer, I have a 5e shield generaotr, 4 0a shield boosters, 4a power distributor, 5a fsd, power planet is 5b and some other odds and sods such as cargo scoop, scanners etc.. but even with it all off and power is like 70% used, i get nothing out of the mining laser or my pulse lasers.

Help as I'd really like to mine some mats before doing another 1000ly and then a return trip.

the very last thing i tried was a save and exit - just in case it was some bug but alas, its still the same :(

Cheers

The problem sounds like it's your power distributor, the 88% capacity you're looking at is the total capacity used of your power plant.

The distributor is shown as the three bars with various amounts of dots (usually called "pips") underneath, to the right of the sensor display and left of the fuel gauge.

Thermal overload happens when your WEP capacitor is empty, you need to assign pips to it, the default control is right on the D-pad.

The WEP capacitor has the hidden effect of heat dissipation, the lower the capacity, the worse your ship gets at dissipating weapon heat.

How fast it recharges and its capacity depends on how many pips are assigned to it, its rating (A-E) and class (1-8).

The SYS capacitor is used to recharge your shield and use some utility mounts, with the hidden effect of shield damage resistance depending on amount of pips in it. Four pips give a 58% damage resistance to all forms of damage, so if you're aboot to crash into something or are taking a lot of weapons fire you can negate tons of the potential damage.

The ENG capacitor is used for boosting with the hidden (not as much as the other two) effect of ship top speed, acceleration and maneuverability.

Awesome..
Thanks also Commander GoldenSilver..👍🏼

I would say most or all of us have not operated the distributor properly at least once when we were learning how to control our ships. Don’t worry, there’s far more embarrassing things that most or all of us have done as well. 😉
