General / Off-Topic These forums

I'm so glad that I didn't discover these forums until after I bought my first copy of ED. Had I read them, I would have dropped the idea like a hot potato.

The game is fun and addictive. Warts and all. I have 5 licenses and my wallet is still open.

But if you went by these forums, you'd think that FD can't program their way out of a paper bag. They're actually pretty good at what they do.

What they don't do well is communicate their intentions very well. The disconnect from their hype and what we actually get is a gulf that you could ski through. But their technical skills are first class.

If you have any friends who are considering the game, it might be best to keep the forums a secret until they make their own decisions on the purchase.

Just saying.

I also think they have trouble seeing the product through the customer's eyes. I've often said that it often times feels like a game written by programers, not by gamers - hence the many player-friendly post-release changes that have taken place with nearly every version update.

That being said, it's still a very good game.

I disagree.
This Forum is absolutely amazing, pack-full of great people with ideas, sense of humour, enough maturity to have an actual conversation, helpful people and people eager to learn...

The only thing you must NEVER do is to enter Dangerous Discussion. DD is a basket of drunk rattlesnakes on fire.
The rest of the Forum - pure awesomeness. Never seen a better community.

I was also one of those who played the game long before joining here, though. And it took me long enough (and one total break from the Forum) to realize that it really is only that relatively small group of people who reside in DD and took in on themselves to complain about anything and everything Frontier does and did.

Every section of the Forum has a theme. If you want to discuss something in particular, go to the appropriate section and discuss away with the like-minded people.
DD has also a main theme and that is disagreeing with everything and everyone. If you enjoy this, you're gonna love it there, otherwise steer clear and you'll be fine. :)

Agreed: Sometimes theses forums can be really down on the game itself. That said: I came here first. I had always been waiting for something to replace the 84 game. Yes I know there was frontier elite etc, but I never really got into it. I saw a write up on Elite IV for the Xbox and thought about getting a per order, but the general consensus was, that it was never going to happen. Then one day by accident, I stumbled on these forums; just before the launch of the game itself.

Yes; sometimes these forums put a downer on the game, but for me. They are an unlimited source of information. I understand that whiners will whine, if they get a platform and that we will always hear about the bad, than the good. Plus, an opinion, is; just that.

I agree, although I don't think DD is that bad.

There are a couple of people who are just on a massive downer over the game but I think most of the criticism is valid and is rooted in a desire to see further improvements.

I think that somebody looking at these forums for the first time, before buying the game, would likely come away with the perception that ED is an amazing game which still has plenty of untapped potential and (importantly) that the dev's are still working on it and are willing to look to the community for advice.

Overall, a new player is likely to get the feeling that they're not just buying a product but becoming part of a community who have some input into where the game goes in future and that seems pretty exciting to me.

Foiled again!

................. I have 5 licenses and my wallet is still open.

Oh thank goodness, someone with more accounts that me! Yippee!

BTW - Totally agree, the game is great (warts and all) the DD cesspit forum is all warts (apart from some great people).

Maybe make Dangerous Discussions a hidden sub-forum until a new user is past the noob/bot filter?

I agree, however my only problem is I got ED fatigue, the lack of a helmsman npc or autopilot makes me feel like I’m a leprechaun trying to climb the giants stairs to the sky castle.

That is true and unfortunate, but honestly I think there is only so much the game can do about it. Because let's face it - we play Elite A LOT. And every new feature, however welcomed and awesome (like NPC crewmates, like atmospheric landings, etc...), can only delay the inevitable feeling of "been there, done that" burn out.
I think it's up to us, veterans with thousands of hours clocked, to play responsibly. To acknowledge this, take our breaks, take it easy, and realize that playing a game for thousands of hours and get a little tired of it means the game is GOOD.

I'm at this stage as well, now. I still play, but I don't play five hours a day like I used to. I just log in to relax, mine a little, do a couple of missions, go exploring just for the sake of it or just fly around, enjoying the flying and nothing more. I am planning to take a month or so off and then clear my save and start over again to reignite the spark. I did it last summer and it gave me several months of enjoyment, so I'm gonna repeat that. :)

Pretty much, I agree. I don't think I would have dropped the game, but I'm glad it was a year or so later before coming here = I didn't notice any of the 'problems' these forums contain pages and pages of people talking about. I was just happily plodding along in space.

I originally came here just to view the HTC Vive thread, when I first got VR, and found it so useful I ventured outside of that part of the forum.

At the time, I hadn't visited a gaming forum in about eight years [because they were still ugly back then, too.]

I've done the same, someone from work was thinking about getting Elite and I've advised them not to come here, first

Which is a bit of a problem in itself.

ED isn't really a game that you can just play for half an hour to get a "quick fix" in the same way that you can play something like Left 4 Dead.

I've heard people using that as an excuse to advocate things like quicker ranking, faster earning, accelerated progression etc but I'm not keen on that.
ED is simply a game that should require a significant investment of time, IMO at least.

Trouble is, that means you either have to jump in the deep end or stay out of the pool.

It is possible to just "dip your toe in" by, perhaps, leaving a combat ship parked up near a HazRes and then just firing up the game for a quick blast but you're not really going to get anything done in a quick session.

Right now, I'm deliberately staying away from ED on the basis that it's summer and there's better things I can be doing than playing a video game.
There's already things that I'm thinking about trying when I come back to it though.
I think it's probably better to deliberately stop before the enthusiasm goes completely.

Well, the amount of good advice I've received from the forums, the laughs I've had from posts...
It's good. Very good.
DD... Meh, it's an outlet, yer gonna get some bad stuff, I like to think people are passionate about this game, yer gonna get some very upset people.
I love it.
Shout out and thanks to the Rear Admirals Lounge, if you like Vettes, check it out.

I've tried to bring my corp mates and allies over to ED from Eve Online several times. ED just doesn't have the infrastructure to support their interests (and mine), at the moment, and all they did was read the reddit posts about the game, not the forum.
So are you going to get rid of reddit too?
I can't honestly ask the friends I've been playing games with for years to invest their monies in a game I can't get behind.
A couple of my group have bought ED recently and say the same things I say in these forums, some actually come from them.

When Elite can field a fleet of 10+ ships to an instance for pvp/pve/mining then maybe that'll catch their attention. Until then and for them (my corp mates), ED is just a "Low-fat, high-sodium Star Citizen." Even the traders and haulers in Eve Online talk trash about the (lack of) trading mechanics. Quote, "How the hell do they make money?!"

We'll keep watching the progression of Elite (particularly myself).
