They're dead, Jim! (Pixels)

A few weeks ago I entered the world of VR, though unfortunately not for ED since Frontier doesn't support PSVR. Once I got over the sickness and used to the lower resolution, I fell in love with it, particularly Skyrim VR, which IMO is the best VR game for PS4 (our chickens and cabbages look just fine, FYI). Having once owned a 3D TV, I also quickly rediscovered my joy for watching 3D movies, which I think is way better in VR than a television or even movie screen! Unfortunately it was while watching Star Trek Into Darkness (a very bright movie) that I discovered my 4 dead pixels...

FWIW, I'm pretty 'fussy' when it comes to my screen quality, especially when watching movies or playing certain games. Once I saw these pixels, I couldn't unsee them. I debated whether or not to just ignore them, but my last device (a Kindle Fire) to have dead pixels only got worse over time, and since my return window was almost up, I decided not to take a chance - I'm returning my PSVR for a refund. I've also decided not to replace it at this time...

So on the topic of dead pixels, has anyone else had this issue with any of their VR gear? PSVR uses an OLED screen, which I've read is more susceptible to this issue compared to an LCD screen. I'm not sure what the PC VR headsets use, but even LCD isn't immune to dead pixels. I can tolerate a dead pixel or two on a high-resolution monitor, but when it's a relatively big pixel floating in my face in VR, that's a little harder to ignore. I would have been more tolerant of this had my PSVR headset been 3 years old instead of 3 weeks old (a few dead pixels isn't "terrible"), but a new $360 piece of equipment should be free of defects IMO. Thankfully Amazon agrees :D

Anyway, you folks are way more experienced in VR than I am, so what are your thoughts?

I'm with you. I find dead pixels to be highly annoying. Luckily the problem has gotten better, for monitors at least. I'd be pretty upset if my new Pimax 8K had obvious dead pixels.

When I first got my Vive I noticed what I thought were dead pixels, I had it all boxed up and ready RMA when someone on here suggested trying the new steam beta which had the fix "Improved appearance of bright pixel outliers, in some headsets." Much to my surprise it worked !

So I guess there's more to a dead, stuck or overly bright pixel than meets the eye  so to speak.

"Dead" pixels can sometimes be persuaded to come back to life. A bit of overcurrent across the driver and / or a brief overvolt beyond the regulator can spring them back.

Or burn them out completely and irreparably.

Back in the day I used to massage dead pixels back to life.
