Think I might wait for release.

Sorry, but I am finding this just too hard. I know it's beta and the lack of tutorial doesn't help, but saying that, I want to enjoy a game that I have bought and it's just winding me up.

I hate that I just cannot travel far with my starting ship. It seems to make buying and selling really hard. I try doing missions, and have no idea where to go. I find it way too hard to find pirates, it's all so vague.

I don't want to be hand fed but I feel I have a lack of patience at the moment for a game like this. I will keep trying with every patch and hopefully be back when some changes have been made, if they are made.

Have fun guys.

Hey dude. It sounds to me that the things you are having trouble with are not going to get any easier. I think thats one of the strong points of this game that you actually have to learn and master this game before you are comfortable. Just keep reading the forum for clues, take the easy missions and shoot feds or eranins at fed distress and most important do what you think is fun and that is different for everyone. Keep at it and you will find your fun and be comfortable with all the controls and how your ship handles. You will also start to see patterns where certain pirates are hiding etc.

But most important thing of all, HAVE FUN! Hope to see you out there Commander

It's perfectly fine to wait until release I'd say.

I would say keep trying, you may as well learn now, and be ready for the game when it is released.

It does have a leaning curve, it isn't meant to be hello kitty. However nothing is too difficult, there is just a lot to do and learn.

Search for how to's on you tube and in the forums, there is also a manual someone threw together.

Chin up, now get back out there commander

This is about the best advice there is at the moment. I probably spend more time reading up about the game and watching other people play than I spend playing myself, and that's helped a lot in terms of quickly picking things up in the limited play time I have available.

To be honest, two things are keeping me playing at the moment. First of all, the game at it's core is amazing plain and simple. I love Elite and I love the thought of a space trading MMO. Secondly, the community is awesome. You guys are really cool and it's so nice to have a friendly maturer community for a game.

The fact is though, I have a few games to play at moment as well as 60 million TV shows that I am trying to get through and do I want to spend my gaming time with a game where I want to throw the monitor out of the window? :)

I know it's beta, so I am not criticising the game as such, I am really criticising my utter lack of patience for it in it's current state. Maybe I should just try staying away from the "hunt ships" missions.

It will probably not get any easier, and you probably should have checked up on what this game is all about before buying it.

If you havent played any of the earlier Elite games (like me and many others here have) or if you are "young" :D and never experienced these kind of games i can understand if it seems overwhelming, todays games have a bad habit of pointing arrows and hand holding.

That said you should really take your time with it because it will be really awarding when you start to get to grips with it.

hehe - despite being in since alpha i felt just like you describe last night. couldn't make a profit for the love of god. :(

however, i have a different take on it, the game experience feels real, raw, exciting and even, dare i say it, dangerous! it feels great!

here is how i got on:

got a mission to fetch some stuff, got stuff, got interdicted, forgot to run and decided my leet skills would suffice in my newly urban cameo sidewinder, came out of the fight with 12% hull and a 100 credit bounty voucher

on the way back to base i crashed. by the time i was back in the game and landed at mission base for my reward, the time limit was over by 5 mins

so i sold the stuff at loss of 172 credits, repaired my units and had not enough cash to repair the hull (1135 need vs 955 have).

so what now?! that was 1,5 hrs game time gone... luckily i noticed a new featrue earlier in the side panel section SELF DESTRUCT *boooom* it went

so new sidey, new urban cameo and into bed for a good nights sleep.

i am sooooo f giddy and keen to play this beta tonight. very very exciting stuff :D :D

:) excellent.

I have to agree with OP to some extent. The game AT IT'S CURRENT STATE is everything but "intuitive". The controls and everything needed until someone who just got the game would be able to successfully, say, trade and go from system A to system B are really overwhelming.

The lack of tutorial (yes, it's a BETA) is certainly not helping either.

I always "hate" seeing people on forums giving advice such as "just read on the forums".

While this is of course legit advice for us nerds who volunteered to "test" a beta game...saying "just read on the forum" is not an approach you can use when we want a game that should ALSO (!) be appealing and playing by "the masses". (Of course I am now talking *beyond* beta...)

From an economic perspective, a game maker cannot afford to make a game which has a certain amount of complexity (which ED without a doubt has!!) and then simply refer to anyone who has troubles telling them "go read on the forums". This would be the best way to kill a game and have it's player base limited to some nerds only! NOT something we want! We don't want a "Eve" clone. We don't want a game where people need to spend a month reading up before they grasp some essentials. The game must be complex but also it must be intuitive in such a way as to not cause problems for the average Joe.

**

I am playing this game for two days now (sort of)..and I have so many questions I don't even know where to start. This is what I am talking about. Just a random example...the different cruise modi...how to get from one system to the other...then I see what obviously are players while cruising to a system...when to exit the cruise modus...then those players are off my screen....when to actually stop flying in cruise modus in front of a destination so that I can then land..and of course the TORTURE which is landing on a station without a landing computer etc...but I know this already from Elite 30 years back.

PLEASE note that for every single day, every single hour where a player plays this game overwhelmed and unsure what to do...players will stop and give up playing. This is NOT how you make a game successful today! There is a reason why pretty much any game has a tutorial mode today.

Look at it like an mmorpg when you start you are lvl 1 witch mean you are limited in what you can do start doing the most basic things even if it just get you 100-300 credits.
Your ship have basic components witch you will be able to upgraded making it more easy (Engine upgrade ecc Still not in beta).
About the missions yes they might be a bit confusing at start but am sure they will iron out the missions descriptions, Killing missions are quite easy to find just go to the System and find the (unidentified signals) be ware you can only see them in super cruse hope it helps.

with respect I didn't just say read on the forums, also you tube, seriously, if you have a question, lets say, how to dock, type "elite dangerous docking" into you tube search and woooooh there it is.

Do this with all the bits you are stuck on

I just typed "elite dangerous manual" in to google and got this:

http://elite.frontier.co.uk/downloads/Sidewinder_Owners_Manual_WIP.pdf

I am not being funny but if telling you where the info is, isn't enough then I am not sure what is?

That's helpful but also highlights my point really. How the bloody hell are you supposed to know that?

As i said before am 100% positive they will improve on missions, what you see now is just basic content witch will get better and better till release.
