Think of the insurance this way and calm yourself.

Your ship is covered by insurance. In order for the insurance to kick in you must first pay a 5% deductible on the claim. The insurer refuses to pay your claim unless you can meet the deductible first.

There is the game's insurance mechanic in reasonable current business practice terms. But it's even better because you don't have to pay premiums (assume they are paid by the Pilot's Federation because they are SO NICE).

Don't fly without having cash on hand for your deductible or risk getting no insurance payout. Just like what can happen to people in the world, but perhaps more generous.

I don't think it's harsh to say "if you don't have the cash to cover the insurance you get what you deserve"

If we were presented with a way to reincarnate ourselves before we die and chose to ignore it... it's our loss.

The current mechanic is entirely reasonable. A tiny proportion of grievances may be warranted given the circumstances of their death... but not being able to afford the insurance is inexcusable.

I've always thought of it this way and never had a problem. It just means being strategic about when to pull the trigger on that new ship.
