Trading - Fly from port to port buying and selling commodities. This is the fastest way to make a lot of money and is about the only thing that works as intended all the time.
Combat - Some weapons and Utility are very useless, there isnt much balance here. I'll keep it simple for a new player; you'll have fun until you realize whats going on in the fight. When you get into higher tiers there are issues with Hit Boxes on modules and you can pretty much shoot the nose of a craft and hit the engines in the back.
PVP - Very broken; If you're fighting someone with a similar tier ship you can just run away before you die. The module designed to stop running is broken and does not work. Currently, there is also a module that lets you repair your shields at the push of a button. All players do is stack an insane amount of these and when they run out, they run from the fight.
Exploration- This is what I spend most of my time doing now, as I have done everything else and I find it fun. It should be noted that I must be weird, as every one else thinks exploration is insanely boring. which it is. Idk why i love it. You basicallly just go around scanning planets and get paid for it.
Mining - Not really possible for a fresh newby, but it can be fun to try after a couple hours. You will need a bit of experience and know-how to do this successfully and turn any profit from it. The payout is quite bad for how much effort it takes. Don't let the game trailers fool you, its not a glorious job.
Pirating - NPCs dont carry anything worth stealing, and players are impossible to rob unless they let you (see: Interdiction submission) plus you will be wanted and hunted by NPC and player bounty hunters.
As for this being a multi-player game there are many connection issues that plague players. If you seek to find many people in "open" play you will be slightly disappointed as i'd say most players only play in solo based on my 7+ months playing this game.
conclusion:
If you buy it, you will have fun for a bit
I got my money's worth
I would not recommend it, though.
