Thinking About Buying, Few Concerns.

I think the game looks pretty awesome and I have been tempted to buy in the past but my main issue is what is the games goal and what all can you do? I am really hoping there is more to it than just dog fighting because it seems that all you can do is just go somewhere and dog fight. Which is awesome but also seems repetitive. So my main issue/question is what all can you do in the game besides fight? Or at least the different ways you can fight.

The game itself has no goals. You make the goal whatever you want. The game has much more to do than just combat. You can be a trader, a miner, an explorer, a pirate, a bounty hunter. You can perform missions for minor and major factions. You can get involved with Power Play and try to influence who controls various systems. I think of ED as an open ended role playing game. You earn credits for the various jobs described above. Those credits can then be used to upgrade your ship or buy another ship. ED is still under development and you can read about the plans for future expansions (aliens -- Thargoids, planetary landings, etc) if you search this forum. Artifacts have already been discovered that may relate to Thargoids. There's a lot of potential in this game. The flight mechanics are fantastic, as is audio and (mostly) visuals. AI has improved significantly and more refinements are planned.

Go watch a ton of youtube videos about the game. I suggest looking up Obsidian Ant, Adored TV, Troa Barton and from there you'll find tons of other guys posting their adventures.

For a brand new player there is a ton of things to do. Trading, Mining, Exploration, Missions, Power Play.. Personally I think the game is best enjoyed playing with and against other players so you could find a group of people to play with too.

I've had many thousands of hours out of the game, so for me I'm a tad bored and eagerly awaiting new content but there is a lot of fun to be had although you do need to set your own goals and dare I say it use your imagination a little. Even though I grumble from time to time I am happy recommending the game to people. Pity you missed the 33% discount at the weekend, but still at £40 you are getting a lot of gaming hours for the price. ;)

Buy it, buy don't expect there to be any reason to invest yourself.

After the initial progression (~ 10 - 15 hrs.. ) to a Cobra mk3 there is very little in the game except grinding. The initial progression is fun, the disappointment of no engaging content after that is horrible. Especially so because you have worked to upgrade your ship... only to find nothing to do with it but grind.

Trading - Fly from port to port buying and selling commodities. This is the fastest way to make a lot of money and is about the only thing that works as intended all the time.

Combat - Some weapons and Utility are very useless, there isnt much balance here. I'll keep it simple for a new player; you'll have fun until you realize whats going on in the fight. When you get into higher tiers there are issues with Hit Boxes on modules and you can pretty much shoot the nose of a craft and hit the engines in the back.

PVP - Very broken; If you're fighting someone with a similar tier ship you can just run away before you die. The module designed to stop running is broken and does not work. Currently, there is also a module that lets you repair your shields at the push of a button. All players do is stack an insane amount of these and when they run out, they run from the fight.

Exploration- This is what I spend most of my time doing now, as I have done everything else and I find it fun. It should be noted that I must be weird, as every one else thinks exploration is insanely boring. which it is. Idk why i love it. You basicallly just go around scanning planets and get paid for it.

Mining - Not really possible for a fresh newby, but it can be fun to try after a couple hours. You will need a bit of experience and know-how to do this successfully and turn any profit from it. The payout is quite bad for how much effort it takes. Don't let the game trailers fool you, its not a glorious job.

Pirating - NPCs dont carry anything worth stealing, and players are impossible to rob unless they let you (see: Interdiction submission) plus you will be wanted and hunted by NPC and player bounty hunters.

As for this being a multi-player game there are many connection issues that plague players. If you seek to find many people in "open" play you will be slightly disappointed as i'd say most players only play in solo based on my 7+ months playing this game.

conclusion:
If you buy it, you will have fun for a bit
I got my money's worth
I would not recommend it, though.

Pretty much this, I brought it and got a couple of good months out of it but in the end of the day you realise that these isn't all that much do do in the game which is enjoyable. The latest new content shows that the Dev is determined to expand on the whole grind principle which does get old pretty quick..

This game has a heap of potential but its biggest problem is that being a crowd funded game it has tried to keep as many people happy as they can which means you get a jack of all trades master of none game..

The game had some awesome ideas. They are all in the DDA. They pretty much implemented none. As a premium backer I paid the extra amount because I was stupid enough to believe what was in the DDA was what the goals of this game were. I now feel as if I were fleeced to get this game off the ground so it may become what the true intention was all along, a console game. I hope I am wrong. I hope things change but once the xbox kiddies get in, I have my serious doubts. I recommend waiting as well. Sorry about being glum but it's just the way I feel about Elite right now. I'm sure others feel the complete opposite of me about this.

You might say this game promises the universe

Perhaps the hype is slowly killing off the player base

Especially with cqc now about to kill world pvp
and PP has successfully killed the sense of direction
