Thinking about buying

Hey guys and gals I need some help here. I've been trying to decide whether to buy this game or not and there are some things I can't seem to find online(pardon me if there's a lot). Like are the expansions going to be free like EVE or do you have to pay for them all like the DLC system for most games. And is there a planned features area where I can see what they want to do with the game, like planet landing, fps combat, etc? Is it going to have a monthly fee or is it just one time payment then you're good to go? Also with it having 400 billion systems are they going to get a bit repetitive since they have to be randomly generated? Are there going to be more ships in the game with more interesting designs than just variations on a box or rectangle with thrusters? Can we pilot "capital" ship sized ships? Are all the stations in the game a cylinder with a slot entrance or is there some variety in that mix? And probably the biggest question I have is how much of a pain in the ass in piloting? I've already backed SC for example but I don't play it much because the piloting is a gigantic pain in the ass for me. I like realism but to an extent where I can still have fun. I guess the easiest definition would be kinda like warthunder if you're going for the ship following the cursor, kind of an arcade style I guess.

As we have no subscription based system big expansions such as the planetary landings and ability to get up and walk around (I would throw in some form of character generation too) will have to be paid for separately, and pricing is currently unknown.

The Newsletter archives are a good place to read, one even mentions things beyond the planetary landings and first person, http://us2.campaign-archive1.com/home/?u=dcbf6b86b4b0c7d1c21b73b1e&id=eb767c006f and one even mentions executive control, but this depends on success of Elite and unlikely before first person or planetary landings.

We will have 30 in total, not all at release on the 16th and depending on how well the game is financially probably more down the line.

Some stations are outposts, and have open platforms.

There is a learning curve to flight as you're also in the seat and not controlling from the outside with the mouse, so it is more akin to a flight simulator, so its definitely a step up from WT in this respect.

If you have WT, try flying in the cockpit and going as full real as possible whilst still using the mouse.

I don't fly Elite or SC with a mouse, so someone else may need to advise more on this.

I am a long-term backer and can help with some things, other people probably also have some great information:

It's not clear to me what features there will be, just yesterday FD dropped a newsletter saying they are going live with less features and also removing one feature: offline play.
The 400bn systems matter. Well, in beta I had seen pretty much all permutations of a system in one day so I feel quite bored already. This is beta however, maybe there is more planned, but it feels like possibly not because the release feels quite rushed to some of us here.
Supposedly there will never be an online sub
Big expansions will definitely require you to pay, such as planetary landing
There are going to be quite a few ships and I personally think all the ship designs are very good with a lot of variety
There are a handful of different space station types in beta, it gets pretty repetitive. Again, I cannot say what will be in release, we hope for a lot more
Piloting is very easy IMO. Even my 7 yr old nephew was able to dock on his third attempt, I think the game strikes a good balance but it really is more on the arcade side of things than the true sim-side. It's good however, combat is generally fun but the enemy AI needs some sorting. If you have an Oculus like I do, then combat is a lot of fun, despite the AI

So, that's the good\mediocre. The bad is that to date network play is awful. it's unstable, inconsistent, there are no real tools to speak of to team up, comms in the game is really weak. I do not understand how FD can sort this for go-live and it's the major fly in the ointment.

My advice to you would be to wait for formal release on 16th December and read a lot of reviews and watch playthroughs. Even though I have backed this game in Kickstarter I find it highly questionable that it can be ready for release, and if you read the forum you will see I am not alone. Generally people are hoping there is significant increase in quality for the go-live.

Maybe it will all be sorted on release - we all hope so - but the only way you can be sure of that is to wait for the actual release and that is my honest advice to you. Do a lot of homework on this game and do no pre-order.

This game is not the dead-cert we all once thought it was and I want you to be careful with your money.

DLC like planet landing is extra cost.
Game is one off payment, no subscription.
400 billion systems even in your lifetime you wouldnt be able to explore,
Not all of it is randomly generated, alot is accurately modeled on what is known in the milky way.
Some spaceships are sleek and curved, some are boxey, it depends what company style made them.
Not all stations are cylinder some are platforms, different designs.
No huge capital size ships, all have to fit in spacestations, but they are still quite large.
Cant really answer the flying mechanic thing. Its opinion.

DLC is just updates i think, not sure about that.

Game is 1 time fee

there is going to be walking around stations and ships, planet landing, idk about fps combat.

all the systems are different, and they're different allegiances and the stations look different.

there are quite a few ships in atm, some of them look like pentagons, some of them look really nice. the largest flyable one now is basicly the N7 from mass effect.

the largest flyable ship is basicly a heavy cruiser, not really a capital ship. i think they plan on adding bigger though. idk.

all the stations have a docking bay that's a big circle, but they're all totally different, and different depending on the type of system. even if they're the same type they'll look different. the least different type is the cube-looking one and most of the time even they're distinguishable from eachother through their lights, "ads" and of course, their unique title texture. the stations are really nice and high detail, they move and they have stuff walking around inside them.

piloting is sweet. it's easy as hell. the piloting is pretty much exactly like warthunder with a mouse.

Offline play was never a core feature http://vrfocus.com/archives/8781/elite-dangerous-offline-mode-dropped-hit-community-backlash/, most features are in place in a basic fashion, but we just don't yet know what else may have been dropped, or added beyond what we have now. I find the game enjoyable right now, so I am looking forward to seeing what is in store for us next week.

You could wait until the 20th and see what beta 3.9 brings if you're interested in the Mercenary edition and playing before the 16th of December.

Yes, thank you. In fact I'll edit my original post as I think it's important to accurately reflect the situation right now.

Sounds good so far, so the generation does get a bit repetitive then. I was wondering about ships because the wiki doesn't have many, only 10 if I recall. elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/ships And most look like either pentagons, oversized rectangles or some other variation. Not really unique shapes from what i've seen so far like SC. What does the merc version have in it that warrents the 75$ price tag? Is the netcode that bad?

Not sure what you mean by repetitive, waterfalls as an example are just that, but they're quite varied in nature. Its the same with Stars too, they're round (well mostly) and most glow to differing degrees. Federation tend to be functional, Alliance should be in between Federation and Imperial, with Imperial going for style:

Those are the 10 currently playable in the beta.
Theres another 20 to come. Some at release, and some after. All are free.

These are some examples.

Its $50 for the merc edition.
Which is about $7.50 cheaper than launch edition.
It includes skins and extras and an extra starter ship.

The $75 version is the merc edition plus beta access.

Netcode isnt too bad. I have seen worse in finished games. And the netcode is still being tweaked.

Yes, the netcode is very bad right know . myself and three friends simply gave up trying to play together. It is the one thing I struggle to visualise being fixed any time soon.

Don't write the game off but I can only advise to await release and reviews playthroughs of final code

Only 30 ships in the game, definitely not very many then. Only 10 per faction seems like.

How many do you want? You can only fly one at a time. :)

30 is enough, No good having 100 if 50 of them are just like the 50 others

They arent faction specific, you arent forced to chose a faction and fly their ships exclusively. its just different manufactures.

This is true and maybe i'm a bit spoiled by the amount of ships SC has and the different variations of each one. Personally I prefer a lot of variety to look at and own for different uses.

yes i was in the same boat as you, and i missed out on the 50 dollar free expansions for life deal.

but if you buy it buy the mercenary edition first for $50 dollars... then buy the upgrade to beta for $19 ..it is cheaper then buying the beta outright

How many does SC have like currently? I havent been following it.

I did a rough browse on star citizen's website and if you ignore the variations (Only thing thats different is the internals and paint job which you can customize in elite anyways) of a ship and just go by different hulls it looks like +- 30.

It's RSI's wonderful money making machine, selling ships 2 years before the games out. I mean $110 for a ship ?

On mouse use... I am disables and have just the 1 working hand and a gaming mouse (19 buttons) and I find it suffices BUT I am keeping my eye on ebay for a joystick because I can see where it will be more appropriate.
