Thinking about traveling...

So I currently have about 40 and a half million in assets, I'm flying an Asp fitted for a bit of everything, and have been trying to grind for a Clipper for some time, but haven't had much luck with the arbitrary nature of the rank progression quests. I saw a picture of the Pillars of Creation today and am feeling inspired to refit my Asp for exploration and head out to the Eagle Nebula to see what there is to see. Has anyone been out there? Also, should I keep the Asp or would the Clipper be more fun to take?

Well, the Asp is the standard choice for exploration because of its long jump range. The darker patch between the spiral arms might require 30+ ly to cross, if you want to go that route, I think that would pretty much rule out the clipper.

The eagle nebula itself has most likely been visited before, it's a landmark too close to the populated areas to be ignored for long. Still, might be well worth a visit. :)

Kit out the Asp with D modules except for the FSD and fuel scoop. Any weapons and shielding are up to you as you can still be interdicted by NPCs while exploring for about the first 500 ly. Obviously grab a Detailed Discovery Scanner and an Advanced Discovery Scanner, unless you just really like the tedium of searching by parallax shift, then go intermediate.

Then just go! If you're going to a nebula or some other obviously interesting place on the galactic map, then just prepare yourself for it being a sight seeing destination, because chances are, someone else has already gotten there and first discovered by is already taken. But that shouldn't stop you from visiting and checking it out for yourself. Stonehenge has been around for a looooong time, but people still enjoy going to look at it in person. :)

Here is a good post explaining how the arbitrary nature is less arbitrary and boils down to more rep for more fractions. That said, I was doing the same as you and started grinding for more different sectors fractions and 2 Navy ranks popped up in a row, but neither gave me a rank increase upon completion. Unless I understood it wrong I thought each time you complete a rank mission your rank jumped a whole rank, so I ticketed it.
