Hardware & Technical Thinking of a new HOTAS

I currently play (using the term play loosely right now hehe) with a Logitech extreme 3d pro but, I'm interested in the x52. Is it nice having the separate throttle controller? I currently have thrusters and numerous other commands on the left side of my keyboard. I was wondering if I would be able to assign all these commands to the throttle device thingy.

Yes, it's a game changer. I can pitch / roll / yaw, directional thrust, change flight assist, power levels, fire my guns, boost, etc, all at the same time without taking my hands off the throttle and stick. That can be the difference in a fight.

So are you talking about the x52 pro with the separate throttle and stick?

The X52 Pro is pretty much crap, but unfortunately it's the best available in its price class.

I have one and hate it. The main centering spring is weak. The feel is cheap and plastic-y. The axes have a lot of noise. I ended up giving mine to my daughter to use with Microsoft Flight and got a Thrustmaster Warthog for myself.

If you can swing the high price tag the Warthog really is the way to go.

holy moly they're expensive. hmm maybe I'll just stick with the 3dpro and keyboard.

Heh... yeah. Not only is it ungodly expensive the damn thing weighs a ton. Wrestling it around your desk would get to be a big pain. I probably shouldn't recommend the Warthog unless you're going to put it in a dedicated sim setup like I've got.

Buddy of mine uses the Logitech 3D Pro and likes it a lot. Another option I've heard good things about is the Thrustmaster T.Flight. It's running around US$50 on Amazon right now.

That said, I do think the X52 Pro is probably worth dealing with the bad for the extra functionality. There really needs to be another mid-range HOTAS option.

there are only three reasonable choices depending on your budget:

1. t.flight hotas x
2. x52 PRO
3. CH products pro throttle + combatstick or fighterstick

CH products being the most expensive here are also the only ones actually delivering good and solid build quality and will live longer than any other setup.

Yeah. I was hoping I could find a throttle like device for my left hand that would do everything as my keyboard. Because after an hour of play my wrist starts to hurt from laying it next to my keyboard.

Well also the ch pro throttle is the only throttle you can buy as a single unit.

Yeah I have the CH pro throttle, fighterstick and pro pedals and they're rock solid and if you need spare parts there's a rep on the CH Hanger forum (Debbie I think her name is) who has sorted me out with pots for free before now. The only very minor drawback to the CH setup is they're all analogue pots rather than encoders on the axes so you need to calibrate them every so often. Other than that though they're golden and the config software is second to none.

Oh, I guess if I'm being picky, the analogue thumb joystick on the pro throttle doesn't centre all that well but you can work around that by setting a dead band and non-linear response in the control manager.

i got the x52 (non pro) for 80 quid and it's been a dream to use for months now tried my friends warthog and thought "nice but certainly not worth that kind of money."

Erm.. Actually.. CH throttle with Thrustmaster T.16000M is a pretty damn good combo. And you get to have yaw with the stick twist...

If only CH did twist...
