Thinking of cancelling my CV1 and getting a VIVE.. advice please.

... rift is in post, currently at barking...... shame they do not do sat deliveries as it is not coming to tuesday now, but never mind.

Same here, but they've moved on to Tamworth and have again moved on to... who knows where. Tuesday will be the big day though. Very exciting :)

... Also had a brainwave could these combined with fast home Ethernet plugs to solve the cablling issues? but I suspect latency would be a factor..

I think the amount of data that's required for 2160x1200 @90fps might also more than saturate even the fastest of homeplugs. Just a quick calculation : 2160x1200 = 2,592,000 pixels. 24bit colour per pixel = 7,776,000 bytes per frame. @90fps = 699,840,000 bytes per second. That's 5,598,720,000 bits per second, or 5.5 GIGABITS PER SECOND!!! And that's without the audio and data going back in the reverse direction. 5.5 GIGABITS!!!!! I think it will be a while (i.e. not Soon) before we see wireless HMDs. And that's at today's resolution which will only increase over time.

The data could probably be compressed, but I'm no compression expert and can't guess how much that data could be shrunk without losing information. I suspect that even that wouldn't be enough to work over today's wireless technology.

I think we'll need a new leap in wireless technology before we see wireless HMDs unfortunately :(

Data can be compressed quite a bit, but the problem then becomes the lag from compressing and decompressing. Lag is much more noticeable in VR than on a monitor.

I own the Vive and it works great. I fly the Lakon 6 and there is nothing like standing up on your bridge and looking through the cockpit. .

I have been doing that with my DK2 for the past 2 years. Not got my CV1 yet, but I have been perfectly able to walk around my cockpit since playing. The vive offers no extra benefit than the DK2 or indeed the CV1 in ED. Too many people think that you HAVE to be seated to use the Rift.

I received my Vive 7 days ago. I was really enjoying it until I bought Elite Dangerous. The poor image quality makes me very upset. I've been thinking about trading my Vive for an Oculus Rift. I'm undecided for now.

This is covered in several other threads on this forum.

There's an ongoing issue with the Vive and its poor resolution in ED.

Stcik with it - there will be updated drivers (and possibly ED updates as well) that will fix it. No idea on when that might happen - keep checking threads back here.

This is 1st-gen hardware (and pretty early on the software side too)... it will take some time to make the latest HMD's like the CV1 and Vive shine.

But that would put you at the back of an already saturated queue for an Oculus Rift. The problem with ED is a software one, which Frontier will be able to fix in time.

Personally, I'm finding the Vive perfectly serviceable playing ED (which I agree did look better on even an Oculus DK2), plus there are many other experiences that really suit the Vive, so I'm sure keeping mine!
