Thinking of getting Oculus DK2

Hi

I am thinking of getting Oculus but unsure what specs i need to run it good and could use some help here.

I currently use an alienware x51 with i5, 8gb ram and gtx 660 1.5g.

Will i be able to run elite good with it or do i need better specs?

Tried checking oculus site but couldn't find a clear answer on specs it needs.

not sure. trick is you need to be able to run it above 75 fps (or thereabouts) its gets pretty stuttery below that. at least in my experience. if you can find out what frame rate your machine runs elite you might get an idea if you can run a dk2 on it

I think the video card might be a stumbling block. I can't run it well with a 770 gtx, I need 2 in sli.

You can see from my signature that I don't have for now a Goodrig, but it does the job well.
Here is a video showing some small tests. Sorry for video quality

GAMMA01:TEST SETTINGS Hope you made your Idea.

And by the way.....................STOP THINKING!!! :D

And go for a 970 and you should be just fine.

Framerate depends entirely on the implementation, for E: D I'd say that your 660 is probably at the edge of usability. I'm running an i5-3570k, 16GB RAM and a 4GB 760GTX (stock speeds) and I can get it pretty smooth dropping the settings to low, however being inside belts still kills framerate. Running off the monitor on the same settings (1080p) has me at around 95fps (vsync disabled) so there is definitely extra overhead for the Rift processing over a normal monitor image (supercruising around I get a smooth 75fps on the Rift, it's just stations and belts that seem to start taxing my hardware).

The friend who got me into it in the first place is running a single 980 GTX, and that seemed to handle the DK2 fine even inside a Coriolis, so if you have the option (and money) to replace the GPU then I'd consider the 970 or 980 to be the go-to option.

I used to have a heavily over clocked gtx670. It was perfectly OK for elite on minimal detail.

Anything less than that however I would say is too weak. Apart from that it is ces soon (6th Jan) and who knows maybe you could make an informed decision then, we may find out more about cv1.

I adore my dk2 and elite is the perfect showcase for it, but if I were in your shoes I would wait for the and 390x to come out and then upgrade your gputhen you can either get a dk2 or wait for cv1

I have an iMac and i play ED on the windows partition, i have an 3.5Ghz i7 and a GTX 780M. I can play ED in native resolution 2560 x 1440 with ULTRA settings and get 30fps in a busy station and 75+ easily elsewhere... However, in DK2 i get a fair bit of juddering even when i set everything to low quality, but the problem is when i set the oculus quality slider to low i can barely read the HUD. A lot of the tech demos work lovely, but my machine seems to be struggling with games. It seems to me the DK2 drivers have about a 50% overhead so when they say you need to run a game at 75fps to run well in the rift you need to add another 50% onto that so in reality you need to be able to run the game at 110-120fps outside of DK2 to have a hope of running without judder. My gfx card just isn't quite good enough to play ED in the rift (and i have tried all the usual closing down primary monitor and various other tweeks), but you just can't get over the fact that you need a very high end card to play ED well in the rift.

Two days ago I got the chance to try the Oculus Rift and decided to order one even though I initially planned on waiting for the consumer version. I just bought two GTX 970 along with it, I hope with my 4790K cpu I'll be able to run everything at max with 1440p downsampling...

Nice :) I'm sure that will do the job nicely.... I don't regret getting the DK2 for a second; it would have been nice to play ED on it, but i've seen enough to be utterly sold on it being the future of games like ED; the immersion is mind boggling! It's early tech so i'm still hoping they can improve some of that 50% overhead in software! When FD switch to using Direct Mode i'm sure that will help too. Besides, i may get a PC gaming rig just for ED and Oculus next year!! LOL

Following this discussion with interest. I got very close to pulling the trigger on a DK2 before reading that CV1 might launch this year.

My hardware is kind of mixed up. I have a old Core-i7 920 which has a GTX Titan in it for GPU work, and an ASUS ROG G750JS laptop which has a GTX870M which I am using for ED and it runs quite happily.
I'm hoping to build up a new rig to host the GTX Titan based on an X99 motherboard, but it seems a shame to have to leave the laptop behind just to use a Rift.

I'd also heard the DK2 is quite heavy to wear, and that CV1 will be significantly lighter, making it more comfortable for longer usage periods.

A couple of months ago, there was a rumor it would come out in 2016, not 2017. Oculus shot that down saying it would be months, not years. Later, said more like "many months." So that puts it at 23 months maximum (otherwise, years), and at least 6-9 months, as "many months."

I decided the $350 was worth getting AT LEAST 6 months of play. I can always sell it for a loss on E-bay later (DK1's still sell for a good residual value).

In the last month or so I've had the DK2, I've really, really enjoyed it. I'm running it with a single 970 card. Get some judder in the big stations, but most of my settings are on or near max.

Honestly, it's still a great experience, even with settings set lower. It's about the immersion, and with the limited resolution, the high end graphical settings probably don't make such a huge difference. Get the Rift, and see if you can run it with the current graphics card. There wasn't a back-order when I ordered it (shipped in 2 days or so).

I'm running my DK2 on an oldish i5 cpu with a 970 card. Everything is at the highest settings and I'm using 1440 supersampling. Runs very smoothly. If you can afford to blow the money on a Rift, and also budget for a possible gfx card upgrade then I say go for it. The sense of immersion is simply staggering, even with the limitations of the DK2. You should also budget for a decent HOTAS if you don't have one and get Voice Attack installed.

Chances are you will have at least 6-12 months use out of the thing before CV1 arrives.

@ninjagaiden - It's not heavy to wear. I find it quite comfortable along with a headset for 1-2 hours at a stretch.

i am wondering (also near rift buyer) how does, for instance, typing ingame replies work for you dont see the keyboard? and i have a x52 saitec how does it work with that?
