Thinking of mining in my asp

Class 6 Cargo in the Class 6 Slot? And ditch the interdictor + scanner, use 2x class 1A collector controllers and use the now free Class 3 Slot for a Refinery

I'd also lose the discovery sacnner and fit a prospector instead.
Firing a prospector a the next 'roid you plan to check while still mining the current one can save a little time.
That also aids you in knowing which direction you were going, or acts as a beacon to come back to if attacked.

Why not 2A collector limpet controllers for faster collecting. Also class 2 mining lasers will mine faster but the bottle neck is ways collecting the fragments anyway.

Dump the large cargo racks, unless you plan on staying out there a long time. Bigger refinery, and I agree on the 2A collector. Also, get a prospector.

I'd tend to go for a bit more protection as some RES can be fairly lively ;), remember you're going to be an almost stationary target until you turn and accelerate away from the asteroid you're mining so even a small fighter or two could cause you some trouble.
Remember you need to carry a stock of drones in the cargo hold (at least twenty), wait until you've mined out an asteroid before deploying a collector drone so it'll scoop all the chunks nearby, depending on it's lifetime it should follow your ship to the next asteroid, TBH I think the prospector drone mechanic needs some work as you can get most of the info just by collecting a chunk manually.
I found putting the drone fire control on a 2nd fire group was best and having the weapon and mining lasers on button 1 and 2 respectively (fire group 1)

Don't go into High RES spots, they're for Bounty hunting not mining, instead once you get close, deselect the RES, stay at under 1000Mms and drop close to the RES, you'll get the benefit of higher yields without the annoyance of being attacked while you are mining. Better still find a non-populated pristine metallic system and mine in peace.

LHS 2661 (planet 6) is my favourite, very dark though so use Sensor zooms to navigate, and it's a white dwarf so throttle down before exiting witchspace. LHS 355, Ramelli Ciity at 16ly from LHS 2661 and 16ls from the star is the best drop-off point for your goodies, best demand within 60ly.

Don't bother with Prospector drones as they are a waste of limpets IMHO (you'll want about 30 limpets for your cargo capacity BTW). I haven't mined since they "fixed" the drones, but I never have fitted more than a single 1A Collector Control as multiple drones tended to not work so well and waste limpets more.

Seek out and mine the smaller rocks as they tend to yield the best returns, the larger rocks are sometimes worth it, but usually tend to be more Gallite and Indite than anything else.

I often find the little rocks on the edge of the field, so tend to avoid going to deep into the field, instead I surface skimm for the smaller rocks, I get a lot of Painite (10+ tons per trip) this way.

If you like to be picky go with a Class 2 refinery, as 6 bins cover all the valuable metals, 9 bins (4B IIRC) covers everything you can mine, so you never need anything bigger/more expensive.

Only cut out 4 or so fragments at a time, as fragments degrade over time, so you never really want more than 6 to be collected by the drones at one time.

Don't fire your drones directly at the rocks, they can impact and die, if a rock is rotating wait a few seconds before sending off a drone, as that will allow the fragments a chance to clear the rotation and aid in drone survivability. Or you could just position yourself along the axis of rotation, which also works.

Make sure you use wet wipes. ;)

Seriously though you need a good wingman to cover your back. It's not really something you should do alone.

You never go to a resource collection site, unless you want to see NPC's. If you pick a good spot far away from the resource sites, then you will never see an npc.

I've now tried most every feasible ship in the game for mining. The three best are Asp, Python, and Conda.

Asp can make about 500k to 1 mill an hour, which is dependent upon how many collectors you can have out, cargo space, how fast you can deplete an asteroid, and how fast you move around.

Python and Anaconda make about 1.2 to 1.5 mill an hour with 7-9 collectors out at once and four medium mining lasers. The timeout needs to be modified to 20 minutes or more in order for mining to get closer to Trading profits, and also the refinery should have a selection for refining everything that comes in, rather than asking each and every time.
