Ships Thinking of trading when I get back form exploring. Is the Type 7 a good ship to trade in?

Been out exploring for months. Hopefully will have in excess of 70 mil when I return to the bubble. I am thinking of a Type 7 to trade in. Any sagely advice on downfalls and suggested trading builds for a good Type 7 or am I wasting my hard earned credits and should I try another ship to trade in? Like another Asp for example. Less cargo but punchier.

All advice appreciated CMDRs.

I've never tried one myself but if you've got over 70 mil to spend then a Python is a much better buy as it's capable of almost any role in game, I use mine for BH, PP, trading and without cargo it'd make a decent explorer, think of it as a large powerful Cobra that can also land at outposts.

Python

a lower cost version but still very capable

Obviously a lot more expensive but if you're interdicted in a 7 the only option is run as even the best shields (you need to remove the weapons to run them!) are about 40% those of my budget Python, even without shields the 7 can't carry as much cargo either.

Another option in the next release is the FAS, essentially it's a Vulture without the power issues and decent cargo capacity, the weapon load is not far off a Python and unlike the Vulture it's got the power to run a lot of different weapon types.

Not a fan of the Empire myself but a Clipper is great value and seriously fast so it's worth considering if you've got the rank of Baron or higher, it's too big for outposts I'm afraid.

The Asp is also a great all rounder, and it makes a great mining ship (just been testing one) it's also well priced so you could have a Vulture and/or a FAS as well to take a break from trading ;)

Yeah, T7 is a bit of a ship for masochists that can't afford anything bigger/better.

Having said that, I do quite enjoy mine. It gives that additional bubbly feeling of increased risk while trading in open with a cargo load that costs more than the rebuy of some fancy ships. This is specially bittersweet when turning for some maneuvers and you get that "sitting duck" feeling.

But yeah, with the dosh you will be making after you cash in your pile of exploration data (particularly if you hit on a explo-CG or something), the Python would clearly be the superior choice. Sadly you will miss the T7 experience, which is something you should try as well.

I feel that T7s are a ship that are purchased for other people to fly. A convoy of these with hired pilots would likely be safer and more cost-effective than the same capacity of T9s or T6s. As an Owner-Captain it is not something you would choose to fly.

Slow and cumbersome (not as bad as T9 by a good margin of course), an underwhelming capacity, mediocre defences and large pad requirements.
Python for practicality or Imp Clipper for style are much better options. If you want to rare goods trade, the Asp is your best option and will require little modification from an explorer setup.

I had a T7 as my trader for a while, as long as you just want to trade it is fine. Can't do anything else - except mine in safe places perhaps.

Python is definitely better. Go to Li Riu systems for 15% discount make a big difference.

I had the python as my trader for a day but then realised I could afford a T9. The python made trading (smuggling in my case) too easy and T9 has way more money earning potential so I swicthed. I'll definitely revist the python but I have an asp, vulture and cobra to play with when I'm bored of the space cow.

Thanks for your replies. I'm going to keep my Asp for exploring and definitely consider a trader Python setup.
With more money from trade I'll probably refit the python for combat and go dominate the CZs/RESs.

The type-7 is a transition ship. Yes, it is good for trading and mining. It is very difficult to fight in, you are better off running away every time. I had an Asp that I was using for trading and mining and I sold it for the type-7 (mostly a-rated). The Asp can fight off NPCs the Type-7 cannot. I cannot afford a Python (more than double the cost of a type-7 for a stock) yet, otherwise the Python is superior in every way for trading and mining AND it can defend itself compared to the Asp and Type-7...but it is considerably more expensive especially with upgraded internals.

That being said, I make WAY more money in the type-7 than the Asp. It will get sold for a Federal Dropship as soon as I rank to Ensign though...like I said "transition ship".
