third party apps/tools & the journal

Hey guys

so i'm out in the black now in my explorer account and as a result of some previous questions i asked i am using the following

Captains Log 2:
ED Discovery:
Elite Dangerous Star Map:

I generated an API key for EDSM and added it to CL & EDD but ED Discovery is so unstable and crashes on me all the time & i really like Captains log but it doesn't seem to have the level of detail that EDD does in terms of logs anf flight logs. Captains log only seems to be collecting data into a DB whilst elite is running whilst EDD picks up the logs and fully updates EDSM

I like Captains Log and have that running as on a second monitor but am i updating EDSM by just starting ED Discovery up waiting for it to sync then closing it again? I dont want to drop any data.

Also The journal, is that only generated locally? I have my main PC at home which i play Elite on but i also play it on my laptop whilst i'm out and about, if the journals are generated locally and i use either of these apps on my laptop am i going to essentially re-write my own history by re-syncing from different journal locations ?

Lastly are there any other third party tools i should be using or that you recommend? I very much have the exploration bug at the minute and am loving the detail that the external tools give you

Cheers

Assuming you've got one EDSM account and the same API key is in EDD on both machines then they'll both be updating the same travel history in EDSM. If you've got Sync From EDSM enabled then the two EDDs will stay in step as well (for travel anyway, one won't know about non-travel events on the other so things like estimated scan values and so on will be incomplete unless you copy the actual journals, copy the EDD database or have a big enough USB drive to hold the database and point EDD at it on both machines so you can swap it back and forth).

Also use the help menu in EDD to go to our dedicated forum thread, our discord channel or github and please do tell us as much as you can about the instability you're seeing so we can try and diagnose your problem. There are an awful lot of people for whom it runs stably and faultlessly 99.9% of the time but we can't fix stuff we don't know about...

Cheers for that, I'll get some info over to you after work and see if we cant sort out whats going wrong

I also run Capts Log 2 and ED Discovery, I even went out and started an account on EDSM so it could track and all that, I am not so computer literate and it is difficult to set things up that aren't plug and play, but I put the API key where I was supposed to and it didn't work, the API key I put in for EliteGalaxyOnline worked great and so I run that instead of EDSM, but I don't have any issues too much with ED Discovery, although it does tweak out every so often and stops running, but a simple restart resolves whatever caused it to go down. But I do have one question regarding ED Discovery, I was perusing through the menus, and there is a tremendous amount of functionality there, more so then I can figure out, but I noticed something in there about uploading pre 2.2 update logs something or other, and I was wondering what that does, I had my spreadsheet that tracked all my first discoveries crash a while back, lost all the data I had inputted at the time, the only information I was able to save was the total number of first discoveries, which was 11,835. So I was able to go back, at least post 2.4 update and locate much of the lost data, took me months of Gal Map searching to locate most of them, and the trips that I had taken pre 2.4 I just had to search the red systems that I was able to open and check each individually for first discoveries. I located all but 202 of my first discoveries, I was wondering if I could upload those log entries into ED Discoveries and would it show them on the map? Would be helpful if it did, I only need to locate one system that I have first discoveries in that isn't in my new spreadsheet, then I could find all the rest.

Before there were journals systems you jumped to (and later their coordinates) were written to the net logs. You had to manually edit the game config files to enable verbose logging for this to happen. If you did that and have the old net logs that that's the menu option to load them.

If you don't know what I'm on about then you don't have those pre 2.2 records, alas.

I knew about verbose logging back then because I was using the old Capts Log and at the time it was required to turned on. Had to go in after each update and reset it. The thing is, I didn't save the old Capts Log databases, usually deleted them when I was done with the trip (stupid...I know) but if FDev didn't rewrite any of the old files with the present updates, they should still be on my computer cause I know I didn't delete anything in the game's folders.

If you've still got the old netlogs then EDD can still import them and that menu option is what you want to click - it'll ask you where they are, browse to the right directory and let it run.

That's good to know, I will give it a shot next time I log into the other account and see if I can find my missing first discoveries. I remember sending a ticket into FDev when my spreadsheet crashed to see if they had a way of tracing my old logs. Maybe what I should have asked is if they have a search type program that would list all the first discoveries found by a specific commander. I mean, the information is there, otherwise I would not see the name of the first discoverer every time I jump into a new system, don't think it would be too difficult to write a simple search program to troll the exploration data that has been turned in and return the names of the first discoverers, at least not for an experienced programmer.
