General / Off-Topic Thirty three years, one rubber band: My Amstrad CPC lives again!

Awesome post AJW.....my god, distant memories are flapping around in my 46 year old skull!! I seem to remember a game about a mummy in a tomb? The old 464 was a massive leap up from my Speccie 48k (I wouldn't touch a commodore 64 <spit> early computer wars ;) ) went to an Atari ST next (Dungeon Master goodness!), then I succumbed to Commodore and got the Amiga (which blew my mind).......(desperately tries to catch those memories!)

Yup. I made the mistake of buying a Spectrum. God-awful rubber keyboard, and abysmal shimmering screen display due to having to work with a TV. And the BASIC was just plain crap. Selling the CPC series with proper keyboards and monitors was a definite plus for anyone wanting to do more than just play games.

I've just spent the afternoon fiddling with the 'Space Invaders' clone I wrote back in 1984, trying to reduce the flicker. Which probably means I can claim the 'longest time taken to develop a space game' record from Chris Roberts. ;)

Oh and me too, I had a CPC464 with the colour monitor. I remember the days playing Elite on it and Rowland on the Ropes :)

Good times :)

V2k.

Roland on the Ropes? I've got it on tape! One of the better early CPC games, from what I remember (not tried to load it).

For anyone wishing to recreate the whole 80's Amstrad CPC experience without the need to find a working one, I can recommend WinAPE, the Windows Amstrad Plus Emulator. Works right down to the emulating-machine-code-timing level, and comes with a built in assembler and debugger to make assembly-language programming simpler. I've not done a great deal with it yet, but it seems pretty intuitive and robust. http://www.winape.net/

I was implying, in a humorous way that Alan Sugar is very shrewd with his money, to the point of meanness ( at least with regards to Bill Gates ). The guy was tighter than a camels a***hole in a sandstorm. :D
I like him though. He's a hard working self made man.

Thanks!
