This community is 'different'

**** WARNING - MINI RANT ABOUT TO COMMENCE ****

A bit of background - I have been a gamer since gaming started on computers - played to exhaustion the original Elite. And if a game captures my attention, and there is a forum for it, I tend to get involved in it. Most game forums talk about the game, and you can get a lot of good information from them. They can also be fun, and at times biting.

But this forum is different. There seems to be a not so small minority that every thread, every post is an attack on the game. If FDev make an announcement I can just about list who will respond immediately attacking everything that is said, everything that wasn't said and everything that is inferred. If a player makes a thread these same people will hijack the tread to again voice their displeasure about the game. According to them, nothing works, everything is broken, all other space games are far superior and Frontier Development are either going broke, have shelved the game, or are conspiring with the devil. The strange thing is there is a lot of 'complaints' but very little constructive criticism and a dearth of suggestions to remediate these often perceived problems. I am beginning to wonder if some of these vocal opponents of the game still play it or in truth, every played it!

Are these people actively trying to push players away? Do they realise that new or even prospective players might read the forums before deciding to buy the game, see all the doom and gloom posts, the attacks on anyone who might disagree with them and decide not to buy or play the game? And god forbid if a player comes here to ask a question, the post is normally ignored, the player is ridiculed or told to 'git gud' and the post quickly disappears off the first page, never to be seen again - if it wasn't take over by someone's pet peeve of the month.

I am even hesitant to mention the quality of the complaints, never in the annals of history has there been so many top level, expert programmers playing a game - because they all think a major change to the code can be whipped out before finishing work for the day. Hey they can imagine it, so why can't FDev drop everything and program it right now.

Look, I am all for robust and entertaining discussions here in the forum, hell I encourage it. I use to love some of the epic war of words in the Battlefield 2 forums about which gun was better, are all medics stupid etc. And whilst there were complaints, not to the extent I see here. It seems whatever Frontier Development do, they do it wrong. If they advise the community that they will be working on existing features to fix bugs, they are attacked for not developing new content. If they advise they are bring new content out, the very same people will complain that the company should be fixing what is already there first.

I guess in the end, I just can't understand why these people are here. They evidently despise the game, loath the Company that makes it and will do everything in the power to rubbish the product. Honestly, if, as they keep on telling us, there are better games out there put out by better companies, please go and play those and leave us to enjoy this game without being told endlessly how bad it is.

..............and the moral of the story is: I really didn't have to read all of that and we do have to get sucked into the 'voices of doom' threads.

You have not been on many game forums, have you?
This is by far the friendliest forum I know of. On every board there will be haters, defenders, noobs and veterans, and of course trolls who are just there for the giggles.

If you don't possess the mental shields to withstand the humanity average spread, you can just keep yourself from Dangerous Discussion. Everywhere else, this forum is awesome. :D

I have to agree with you (as someone who's been playing and programming PCs since the VIC20, TI99, and Apple IIe)

My conclusion is simple: The negative posters stay around simply because this forum is not dead.

I mean, they obviously have a lot to say (even if it's negative) and where better to say it than in an active forum (not too many of those left out there.)

To be fair, there aren't THAT many truly "mindless haters", here. (Those three obvious SC fanboys who just troll are actually rather amusing)
Most of the negative feedback is quite constructive (aka most people who spit fire and brimstone, here, actually LIKE the game and want it to get better).

Though I have to say that many of us have problems with HOW they say things rather than WHAT they're actually saying. But that the fault of the education, not theirs per se.

In other words you are a white knight.. There are many.. GLHF

Not my impression. Some rant threads for sure, but mostly just lively debate and sometimes funny.

Disagree with the OP that players asking questions are ignored, ridiculed, etc. My experience is the player community on forum generally responds with a shopping list of suggestions and tips, and even sympathy (at times)

(P.S. but...Kerrash, I'm not a Mod :D)

And this is the stuff we can leave up :(
Some people seem to be incapable of posting their opinions without diving into a tirade of insults and expletives.

And some people seem to have never made any critique in their entire lives..

Sadly my posts dont have a glowing blue highlight..

I don't think it's as bad as all that. There are a small handful of people who seem so consumed by hatred and rage over the game that I do wonder what they get out of being here. If Fdev actively hated their customers as much as these people say they do, there is no chance of the game ever getting better, so why flog a dead horse? But you can find those sort of people on every forum and indeed in every walk of life. I'd say there are fewer of them here than in a lot of places. I don't let them bother me.

Most people who criticise the game, even very harshly, do so out of a desire to see the game improve. Sometimes people can be intemperate, but it's not ultimately coming from a bad place. If you think they are wrong, challenge them on their specific claim. This is an open forum for debate and there will be conflict. But this place is pretty civilised as far as the internet goes...

...and of course the mods are partly to thank for that. I moderate for a living, along with other social media related stuff, so I understand the challenges. Any moderation martyrs out there should walk a mile in these guys' shoes.

That's what I was going to say, this forum is a beacon of light and purity compared to some games forums I've visited.

I don't know you OP, but normally when i will chose a game to buy i read the criticizes not the recomendations.

The logic is simple: People that are in love with something have their sense of good/bad messed up.

The criticizes, otherwise, are write (not in all cases for sure) for people that already loved, bug lost the interest because some problems (And the criticics will be about that problems.)

For exemple: if someone read right now the foruns and see a criticize about the GRIND, he can check if he likes this type of gameplay or not before buy the game, this is actually helping another people, not drawing they away.
I already told this in another topics: actually we (The people that have criticizes) are trying to help, while you guys that always say: "Oh, more nerfs and more GRIND, LOVE IT" "You don't have to grind if you fly a cobra" you guys are drawing people away.
What you think? if put in the propaganda some info Like: work 6 months 6h/day to get THIS SHIP A RATED: ANACONDA, be honest, how much people you think that will buy the game?
This is actually the minor problem, the lack of progression is even worse - Ship progressions is not actually a progression for that reason you see that 70% of the PVP comunity don't use big ships to do PVP;
I don't know dude, when i write things where im really want to help, i really want ED with ALOT players but some part of the comunity don't help.

This Game has alot of Black Knights which will by default call Doomsday on whatever FD does. And alot of White Knights which will by default Deny that FD could ever have done anything Wrong. :)

As you have already realized. Its always the very same Names you see for this. So the Easiest Solution in General is. To just use the Ignore Function of the Forum. So that their Posts Dissappear and you can Focus on the Posts of the Remaining Community which is more Open to Discussion on Matters ;)

Most of the negative feedback is quite constructive (aka most people who spit fire and brimstone, here, actually LIKE the game and want it to get better).

Though I have to say that many of us have problems with HOW they say things rather than WHAT they're actually saying. But that the fault of the education, not theirs per se.

I think the thing that can be confusing is that some people seem to carry their RPing mentality over from the game to the forums.

In some cases I suspect it straightforward bias which colours their comments (and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that) and in other cases I think people who get their giggles in questionable way in-game attempt to do the same thing on the forums as well.

Of course, there are also a handful of people (literally, 3 or 4 that I can think of) who are just flat-out disenfranchised with the game but, for some reason, they prefer to keep moaning about it instead of moving on.

For the most part, though, I think the majority of "antagonistic" comments seem to be intended to support something in-game (a faction, a play-style, a type of ship etc) and if people realise that it's possible to filter out the partisan stuff from the genuine discontent.

I love Elite Dangerous and haven't really got any complaints. Maybe being that I used to rarely leave the comfort blanket of the Xbox side of things (before I took around about 3 month break) I haven't really noted any real hardcore 'complaining'.

This time round I intend to dip at least a toe into 'Dangerous Discussions' so I guess I'll see soon enough.

But for me, I'm pleased with the game as it is and with the updates / improvements that have come in

Just don't come to this forum and whine about loosing your ship with no insurance. :D
