I played heavily since Beta 1 and recently took a couple of weeks break. The thought of a wipe for release leaving two weeks to amble about put me off for a bit. Also, the increased negativity on this forum had me wondering whether the game wasn't as good as I felt it was. I was enjoying it, but so many people had so many bad things to say, the idea that it might be a disappointment began to take root. I played Assassins Creed Unity instead.
So anyway, with no wipe and Gamma 2.02 released, I thought I'd (literally) dust off my T Flight HOTAS and ED Tracker and give it another go.
I'm absolutely amazed. This feels like a different game! Or rather, the same game but much improved. The sounds, while always incredible, have been ratcheted up a few notches and seriously, if the sound design doesn't win several awards, there's no justice.
I've just spent a good three hours in my Freagle and didn't even leave the system. There was just too much to do! With 5000CR in the bank, I firstly headed for the local sun to see if there was a nav beacon for some bounty hunting. There was, but it took me about an hour and a half to get there while I investigated every USS I came across. There were so many, it felt like Christmas. (Another poster mentioned lack of content - I feel overwhelmed with content in just one system, without even actually doing any trading, pirating, bounty hunting mining, and so on)
One glorious USS held a wanted Python with a 15,000CR bounty and a few clean ships. I charged my FSD to get out of there, too much for my Eagle, but noticed one of the clean Eagles was having a go at the Python. I thought, why not. With two of us at him, I might stand a chance. Anyway, after a battle in which my ship felt more responsive than ever before, and using lateral and vertical thrusters effectively for the first time, we took him down and I was lucky enough to get the final shot. Frickin' magic. (Incidentally I totally agree with this mechanic - last shot gets the bounty, simply because that's the shot that killed him)
I'm looking forward to getting stuck in (again) to all the other ways of living a life in this galaxy. I know not every feature is where Frontier wants it to be, but my god they've made a truly superb game. I know that in a year from now this will be another, different and remarkable game. What a journey we have ahead of us.
So my feeling now is that come launch day on Tuesday and the reviews come in... we've got nothing to worry about. This game is amazing and it'll blow their socks off.
