This is for us old WASD vets. (My keyboard layout for ED)

So do you find flying around in Elite Dangerous is a little terrifying? Do you happen to own a pc? Are you a WASD master? Then this may help you. I am a 50 year old first person shooter vet. When I started Elite Dangerous, I was horrible at flying. And when you suck at flying then you suck at landing and fighting was well. I had paid too much money for the game and was not about to give up and then it dawned on me to stop playing the default way and customize it to me. I played Freelancer which had an awesome mouse based interface so I tried to simulate that as best I could. So here is what I did and I hope it helps someone like it helped me cause now I only die because of poor judgement (I can take that anaconda with my cobra) instead of poor flying.

1. Changed the w and s key to pitch up and pitch down. This allows to me to fly my ship easier when I use my mouselook. It was a game changer for combat as I can now actually follow those ships a lot better. Moved the throttle keys to + and - on my number pad.I rarely change the throttle speeds that way because...

2. Changed 1 to 25% speed, 2 to 50% speed, 3 to 75% speed and 4 to 100% speed. These are what I use all the time. In a battle I hit the 2 button becasue that gives me a good manuverbility rate. 3 is used when I start to get about 300 ls from my destination and now I rarely over shoot. Also in the heat of a moment I KNOW WHERE THESE BUTTONS ARE! This is because of all the first person shooters I've played over the years.

3. I use a Razor mouse and have assigned the forward thrust button to my mouse 4 button. This was a life saver landing and taking off. Also handy in space battles. I can thrust to maximum non afterburner speed and slow right down again when I take my finger off the button. Real handy for landing cause I use short bursts of thrusts.

4. Left shift is my Target nearest attacker button.

5. F1 is my left panel, F2 is my com panel, F4 is my right panel.

6. F5 and F6 are target next and target previous

7. F7 and F8 are target next subsystem and previous subsystem.

8. G is my galaxy view and H is my system view

9. Number pad "0" and "." are my cycle loadout buttons. (ie. one load out is scanner and interdicter the other is pulse lasers and cannons)

I found this system worked wonders for me. Elite Dangerous is an awesome game and I can kick some serious ai butt becasue of my layout.
