This is getting old.

So many people here dropping opinions when they've obviously never tried the profession.

The reason why shooting the hatch or using hatch breakers is awful is two fold :

1. Either way the cargo spews out randomly in small chunks and is spread over a wide distance.

2. If you shoot out the thrusters first to stop the target running away they carry on at the same speed and velocity sometimes spinning erratically as well. Once a ship is spinning it's near on impossible to attach a hatch breaker or shoot the hatch regardless of weapon used. If you do manage it then the cargo is dropped as in point 1. This means one small lot is dropped and the ship carries on flying. If you follow the ship to get it to drop a second lot by the time it has it's gone too far away from the original cargo and that would despawn. If you stop to scoop the original cargo, once you're done the ship has gone due to carrying on at it's original speed.

Try playing the game before commenting people.

And I'm saying that's ridiculous. They should never value their lives over their cargo. They could try to drop a few canisters, just try!

I've seen even pirates drop cargo when they're dying. It does happen.

That said, you really ought to target the cargo hold. Once it's gone they'll leak cargo and you'll get it whether they run away or not.

I knew all of this. I'm saying that it shouldn't be the worst way to get cargo, and that the ways you mentioned are terrible.

EDIT: I got a frigate in SM's Pirates and I can't rob Trade Galleons because they die in one volley xD

Hit em an an angle. If you take the shot the right way, you can clip them with part of the volley and not do 100% of the damage. The worst that can happen is you sink them anyway, so you're not any worse off. :D

If it could be calculated such that the cost of legitimately pirated cargo could be recovered through insurance, but not if you're blown up, that would seem to fix the problem.

All the ideas I've had up to now have been laughably easy to exploit, even just using my own imagination.
