Engineers This is me.

I haven't really played the game since combat changed a while back then they changed it again and it was still not right, and now I would have to work at collecting things from all over the place to give to engineers so I can get better weapons, shields etc.

I really don't want to do all that messing about it, IMO spoils the game, and it should not be necessary just to be able to hold one's own against an NPC that already has the upgrades. seems kinda forced on you!.

I don't want to join a faction or play CQC for that matter, there should be a way to play like the old elite where there was no factions or engineers or cqc.

Why not either take them way totally from NPC's or make the upgrades purchasable in the market.

You can slate me now :)

When engineers first came out i was turned away by the overwhelming grinding and lack of information. I gave the game another shot last week and now im addicted to engineers. I now spend most of my time with my face glued to inara.cz while hunting down the mats. Call me crazy but i actually enjoy this. Im doing missions and going places id otherwise never see or do. Hunting ships for their insides has a sinister satisfaction to it weather it be random civilians in an Anarchy system or intidicting Elite system authority Anacondas. The engineers opened up new opportunities for me. The initial grind to get them to G5 can be intimidating but the end is so worth it.

just do it. and make them side-grades while they're at it. not only is the grind absurd (*), but more importantly mods should diversify combat, not polarize it.

i have the feeling this is beyond frontier's experience and capacity right now. maybe in a few years.

(*) i enjoy myself a bit of grind and other absurd activities now and then, and even have fun. for a while. but for now i'm mostly off elite until after the beta, then i will play with whatever remains. for a while.

Beyond neither experience nor capacity. Nice to have something in game that cannot be bought and a little bit of skill and application is required. I think its been made perfectly clear that mods are not puchasable and are not going to be. And a very good thing in my opinion...

Getting mods has nothing to do with skill. Just insane amounts of time searching for them and a good amount of luck to find them there.
Imo nothing like that should be in a space sim. We should have a market and trustable methods for finding those things and not following some hints and hoping for the best.
Best of all is that you have to play nearly every aspect of the game to get all the different materials, what also shouldnt be neccesary. But hey, Fronier knows best..... .... ....

Faulty premise.

You don't need Engineered ships to "hold one's own" against NPCs. If you want to play "old elite" try an emulator.

Not slating, just saying.

@sidewinder... one persons 'little bit of skill and application' is another persons 'insane amount of time looking for them'. Its a matter of perspective. 'You have to play nearly every aspect of the game to get them' is i suspect a huge issue for many folks who feel they need to do the arms race to compete in combat and no issue at all for those who prefer to engage in other activities

It's kind of as bad as you want to make it. Even grade 1-3 upgrades make a significant difference, and you don't have to do the extra grind for special effects if you don't want to.

Nothing i have done in engineers has felt in any way grindy. I have unlocked 18 out of 20 and 8 of them to L5. In about a month and while doing other interesting stuff
