This is not my time to die

I didn't intend to head for the core, I just wanted to get in amongst that thick knot of stars surrounding it, thinking it would be a nice change from my last trip to the outer arm, so yesterday I'm about 6000k from the core having decided I have to pay it a visit now. I'm on day 16 of this trip and not had any problems so far other than stupidly face planting a planet which took my hull down to 97% so checking my route planner I see my next stop is another Neutron star with four other system stars, nothing to worry about I'm an experienced explorer right, WRONG!

Dropping out of the hyper jump I catch a glimpse of a yellow star like I'm flying right through it and get the message "Dropping to close" as the ship go's into a spin and ends up facing it " Warning Heat Critical". Smoke rising, turn away, full throttle, drop heat sink, (automatic reactions) take your thumb off the boost button you idiot; 82deg drops to 55 but it's on it's way back up. Where am I, what have I done, where's that Neutron star, am I heading towards it? Heat now 65deg steady not climbing hull still 97% I might just get of this alive.

Contacts tab first item 0.18ls, (Neutron) 90deg left on the compass, second item 3.41ls (Star) 90deg right. Detail scan, nothing else close, 'Must Escape' = Boost = temp 75deg, you idiot brain do that again & I'll cut your thumb off. Think! Ok power off scanners, fuel scoop and sensors I know what I have to do now I cant fly out of this at 263kmh. Drop heat sink, charge FSD, "Align with Escape Vector" Noooo it's turning me right back into the stars corona "4,3,2,1, Engage". Waiting, waiting cabin filling with smoke & fireworks display from the consul temp 160 and climbing fast and then I'm in sc, with the ships computer keeping me entertained with warning sounds and silly messages about heat & hull damage after it steered me into the star with it's escape vector. I'm not making any progress and the temp is now 218 deg I now know I'm going to die out here along with my collected data. Then I'm starting to move steering back towards the gap hoping I don't get pulled out by the Neutron star I see the temp dropping through 216deg and the two stars are falling back I'm going to make it after all. Stopping 1000ls away hull 70% Power Plant 96%, canopy still intact but all modules damaged some badly, repaired critical modules with the AFMU's, detail scanned every star in the system and I'm on my way towards the core again. If it hadn't been for those AFMU's I had on-board and the resilience of the Asp I'd be on my way home now. Interestingly all the modules that took the worst damage (some as low as 30%) were the ones that were powered off, why is that?.

Anyway I'm now 4500k from Sagg A, trying to avoid Neutron Stars with accompanying stars, just wish I could tell my route planner I don't want to go there, again, or the ability to set my own way points would be good.

Fly safe people.

Well done for escaping.

Odd that powered off systems took the damage, I might try some more boil tests to see if this is actual or coincidental.
BTW PP does not take heat damage (strange but true), that 6% damage came from the Too Close crash.

Just checked my panel, the PP is reading 96% not 94% after this crash and it was at 98 after the first one, corrected my post, thanks.

What a nightmarish scenario. Makes me worry to run into it. Well done getting out of it!
I took my hull down to 91% already with just my own fumbles, not getting dumped too hot by the hyperjump.
Three and a half months in, all AFMU used up, ADS down to 70%, heat sink 20%. The worst damage seems to go to things that stick out on the outside of the ship.
At least three more months to go...

This is my greatest fear.

So far I've been to about 1500 systems and have only gotten dropped out at a neutron once. Only took 1% damage.

I didn't really bring along any "oh " measures, and, already looking at over 1000 neutron stars, I have a hard time not wimping out and making my way back. I was just hoping to get my elite status in one long ass trip.

Escape commander, had a few close calls myself with dual Neutron star.
My record now stands at flying through the middle of 2 stars as I exit jump but still remain in SC.

And people in another topic wondering if they should still use shields.

And for good reason--shields do absolutely no good whatsoever when it comes to a scenario like this. To the contrary, they're adding both weight and (if enabled) a lot of heat.

I flew through a star yesterday and stopped right in front of its twin. They were like 2 LS apart. I didn't drop out of SC and kept going, but hit about 220% heat.
Thank Tharg for the AFMU. Now the only module below 90% is the cargo hatch like I care about that, I don't even have any space for a cargo rack in my DBE.

I usually check my next jump before doing it, if it's a neutron star then I throttle down drop out of SC then begin the jump into the next system at a complete stand still when it says throttle up I boost, upon dropping out you are at a near stand still 30 km, that is the safest way I found so far.

You are lucky to be alive, those Neutron stars will ruin your picnic faster than a rabid squirrel with a sandwich fetish.

I'm about 1 month into my planned trip - a complete loop around the core and back the other side, hull down to 98% - due to drunken piloting near a neutron star.

Respect the neutron.

You've got more patience than me, their too boring, about 20 in a row and I'm back to scanning normal stars. Good luck with your Elite quest.

What! 3.5 months in with at least 3 more to go, are you heading for the Andromeda Galaxy by any chance lol. Not surprised your AFMU has run dry, well good luck on your journey's commander I think your going to set a new endurance record. Rep for you

Thanks! The duration of the trip is mostly because I'm a filthy casual: half an hour to an hour a day, 500-600ly :)
I went for about a month anti-spinward 12kly, then turned right to the core. First the bottom of the core, then meeting up with Cmdrs Zefod and Dandak at the core, then with Zefod at the top above the core. Now I'm some 12kly out towards the far side with Zefod rushing ahead of me in his 38ly jumper. We want to meet up as far as we can get. At my current speed another 1 to 2 months. Then 2 to 3 months getting back, hehe. Seeing how I burned to 91% hull in 3 months by stupid mistakes when not focusing, I should be able to make it back at 73%.
When I left, Powerplay was still a glint in Sammarco's eye. I've never seen a Diamondback. I'm at almost 2000 systems visited since the start of this trip.

Just a footnote. Made it to 'Sagittarius A' today now on my way back towards Sol, power plant now at 93% (don't ask) so all is well, sort of. I didn't meet any other commanders at Sag A so had the place all to my-self, I thought it would be swarming with them lol.
