Ships This is nuts: Turret Burst laser engineering.

On a whim I tried turrets.

The biggest problem is the reduced DPS. Everybody knows this. But what if there was a way to almost triple the output?

Top one is stock.

At the same power drain of 1.3 MW, the lower one was engineered to G5 Short Range Blaster ( 75% more DPS) and then fitted with Inertial Impact experimental (50% more DPS)
Although the introduced jitter is a big problem at range, the turret stops firing at more than 1.5 km automatically. That saves power. Because it sure won't be hitting.
Up close <500m is where it works very well as a sort of energy shotgun vs hulls.

How does it compare with other guns? A widely used gun is a gimballed multicannon, generally considered as a reasonable choice.

A size 1 gimballed multicannon Overcharged to G5 will yield a DPS of 11.6. Turret goes to 16.9. Edit: 11.0.

So as a hull killer, the humble turret is quite comparable at close range. The gimballed multicannon is much more versatile: at up to 2000m it still does full damage, but it doesn't have the turret's firing arcs. Also- it will run out of ammo. And periodically stop to reload.
Piercing is 22, almost the same as the turret.

So I just fly above/behind the enemy, and park there with 2 turrets going full blast with just one pip in weapons. Low energy drain means you can fire them all day long.
If they break loose and loop to joust, just roll over to bring the turrets to bear.
For a size one turret, I got my money's worth. Give it a try, see if you like it!

Just switch them to straight ahead mode if the bad guy abuses chaff.

I see gimballs though?

Oops, wrong one posted- comparing the gimbals stock to engineered. . Rubbernuke has us covered though.
Turret DPS goes to 11, comparable to Overcharged multicannon of same size. Fixed it in initial post.

Right, here's Burst Laser Turrets vs the gimballed Multicannons. DPS is about the same after Engineering - but this is Turret vs Gimbals, which is extraordinary.
I think the DPS number in brackets for multis is including their reload times. Over extended fire periods, the Turrets win on paper. Not in practise though- the range and accuracy bonuses are big for the gimballed multis.
