This is ridiculous.

I've been allied with the empire for months.

I constantly check my status, since 1.3, I always have that red arrow, no matter what I do, I said whatever, I'm gonna do some missions and see if I can get another naval ascension (I'm Earl).

So I do a few charity missions that improves my rating with the empire, and the next day my status had changed from Allied to Friendly.

It is bad enough that the rep decays and requires constant attention, but how bad is it when it still decays after doing a lot of stuff that supposedly improves it?

Rep doesn't affect your rank, as you probably know. Go find a charity station, spam the charity missions. Every system I enter these days is allied it seems.

Haven't had a problem on my end...but I've done some really horrible things (massacre missions) for the Empire.

I have just noticed that I am not getting the little blue "up arrow" on any of the factions (major and minor) in the RHS UI page when I am completing missions. I see an up arrow on the mission result page but not on the UI panel - I too am Earl rank but I am not looking to rank up (I'm hauling to try for elite trader) so I had not been looking until I read the OP.

This sounds like a bug, unless you took a long break from imperial missions in there somewhere. It should only take about 10 missions a week or so to maintain Allied.

Highest player-attainable Empire rank is King.

Are you sure your missions were for Imperial-associated factions? If you did some high-impact ones that hurt Imperial factions, or just killed a lot of Imperial npcs, you could've undone your own rep. But as someone else said, that isn't directly tied to rank.

Completely positive, also, as I said, they were charity missions they won't hurt anyone, and I never kill imperial NPCs.

I think my status went down after I repaired my badly damaged Clipper after a pvp session.

Personally I think rep decay should be removed to be replaced by a pilots actions instead, if you fail missions you get demoted but if you always succeed your promoted.

As for the arrows I never bother with them tbh if someone hates me more cause the rep system is nerfed sod it I work for someone else I dont mind im a who pays the most kinds freelancer ;)
