This is the game. thanks Frontier

having been here since the kickstarter and reading hundreds of posts about why Newtonian physics are awesome or why there shouldnt be any sounds in a vacume amongst other topics, I'm happy to say that after playing the Alpha, Frontier have largly ignored these topics and created a game that looks and feels like the Original elite,

judging the game soley on the Alpha combat gameplay Im happy to say that this is the scifi blaster that i wanted.

Thanks Frontier

I think you downloaded the wrong Alpha Mobius. The graphics for me are quite a bit different than the original BBC Micro edition :p

No kidding. I couldn't identify the ships right off the bat in the videos, had to "re-acclimatise" myself to "ships with textures".

Weird I know.. but if you gave me vector-graphic ships, I can tell you what it is. Give me ships with textures, I have no clue :)

Well, Newtonian physics is still there :) And it is amazing to see companion ships struggle with it using fly by wire.

But yeah, watching streams and videos, combat model feels very good. Maybe tweaks there and here, but overall it is feels like finished product, and as you said, surprisingly close to original game.

Gameplay is the reason to 'game' 'play'. To focus attention towards an element that may be realistic to the detriment of gameplay (aka enjoying yourself to the fullest in a space sim) is an erroneous direction.

The alpha is a great combat concept example, but the game needs to be supported by a variety of deep level of gameplay. Dynamics of gameplay is important, and with a space sim there is a danger of it becoming monotone. Frontier needs to pay special attention to seek that dynamic nature of gameplay.

After playing the alpha for hours, there is a sense of boredom creeping in, but it's only natural when your limited to the same actions over and over again. Saying this, the foundation so far are hinting at a truly great final game.

I have to agree also, gameplay trumps realism, as long as it doesn't become ridiculous.

The visuals in Oolite are quite considerably better than the original Elite too, especially with the realistic texture packs added, but this is a whole new level compared to that.

Being that the game has not been released yet, it's a bit early to be counting hydrogen containers in a cargo bay, but i'll join in with the "Thanks very much" parade too, because, hey, i've been waiting for a generation for this.

Yeah I was expecting alpha to get tedious but they have given a good sample of combat missions, I was pretty much expecting a lot less and even at this stage the alpha feels like a polished demo. Looking forward to seeing what they give us next.

I can only admire from afar what an amazing job they have done. Not that I ever doubted it but it is great to see.

I know I am not the only one who, even just watching, were twitching fingers over an imaginary BBC keyboard.

The ball has not just been kicked out of the park with this, it's gone right out of the time zone. :D

one thing i will say about combat is that any player thinking of taking on the role of Pirate will have a tough time staying alive for any long periods, and andybody that wants to survive in iron man mode will seriously have to rethink how they approach combat as taking on lesser ships than yours will not be so straight forward.

I agree. I found myself reading the scanner like it was 1984 all over again.

Read DDF Archive threads to see what's in store. It's much more that combat.

There will be lots of players trying to wingman each other hopefully in ironman if your out solo your gonna be glassed

Just wait for your first manual station landing... ;)

Had a feel for how that might sound like from the keerash live stream and his latest youtube vid. The sound effects get an A+ from me and the grafix is what i wud expect from a modern game. :D

Yes - it does seem to confirm that what they said they were gonna do is done.

Really enjoying the alpha and can't quite get my head round the fact that this is only the very first tiny bit...

Man I picked the right time to pop back onto the forums after a long break for a gander at what's happening!

Sounds epic thus far and getting excited all over again.

Pint of Lavian Ale to the Alpha person reporting the least sleep over the weekend :)

Having been an original BBC player only I was scared it would fall into the new versions that did not hit the mark and to me looked all wrong so never tried them. I promised myself if they ever do a Elite that did the original justice with MP I’d be happy.

Great it feel like the original long my that continue.

I think station landing is going to work pretty well, im using the xbox controller with the left stick acting as pitch and role and the right stick being lateral movements so in theory docking should be easyish .

The engine of the game looks pretty solid but am afraid of the network side will it be stable enough for the multiplayer version of the game, i guess we will find out next month.
