This is what makes Elite Dangerous great as far as I am concerned

I started my first exploration trip a while back, I went about 700 LY below the galactic plane and basically headed more or less west/northwest from my starting point at Deciat if you are looking at a top view of the galaxy map. At about 2,500 LY out I decided, I’m sitting on at least $10 million in exploration data, possibly $20 million. I have one heat sink left, don’t make the mats to synthesize any more. Maybe it’s time to head back. So I go and rise to 700 LY above the galactic plane to go home. I make a few jumps directly south because , why not?

So just before I really start for home I see something I have not seen yet in my travels. This will probably be nothing special to all of the long time players here, but it is a cool thing for me. Keep in mind I’m trying to avoid any exploration guides, I want to find stuff for myself. I see what looks like a tiny blue/white line In the distance. So I head towards it, maybe 20 jumps later it is definitely getting bigger. So this might actually be reachable. So now instead of going home, I have a new goal. Quite a few jumps later, I now have visited the California nebula(I think that’s the one, no longer sure). So now this little line is resolving itself into a line of very bright stars. As I get closer it starts to look like a pretty big clump of stars with a nebula. So last night I was finally close enough to find it on the galactic map. It is a small nebula, can’t remember the name that has quite a few stars around it. They are very close together.

I’m about 350 LY away and might get to it when I play tonight. Based on advice i got when posting in the first exploration trip thread(thanks to anyone that replied), once I arrive I will filter based on outposts to try and find a base in or around the nebula.

It is also interesting that I have not found any completely undiscovered systems in a while. The main star is already claimed, with the rest of the system unclaimed about 50% of the time.

I think this is one of the best “just relax and enjoy the ride” games ever.

Sorry for the long post.

No need to apologize for the long post because it's not long at all :D I always enjoy reading others' experiences, especially those who are new to exploring. For some of us old timers who have been out there for a while, the fresh excitement is exciting in and of itself. You described one of the great things that many of us feel about exploring...relax and enjoy the ride!

I'm by the California Nebula right now. Are you talking about the um NGC 1333 nebula which is in the middle of this odd thickish pencil of stars at a partial downwards angle?

This is my first real explore trip, and that odd line of stars jumped out at me as I dashed around in the Galaxy Map. Not found any untagged planets / systems so far. Hopefully soon :)

I certainly wasn't expecting the outpost on one of the planets outside the California Nebula (Ford something or other). Everything was "Anarchy" till then, then suddenly it was "Medium Security" and I immediately got Interdicted (I have a small bounty on me, NPC claimed to have found me at last)

Yeah, I think that’s the one. I might get to the clump of stars in front of it tonight.

I like that - enjoy experiencing exploration for the first time and finding your own way to do it!

From your description of a blue/white line of stars, visible from a long way out, and the direction your were traveling, my guess is NGC 7822.
The stars would be labeled S171 something. All Blue/White type O stars, many with companion black holes.

That cluster shines bright and draws in a lot of travelers in that area.
It caught me on my first trip out that way.

There is an asteroid base in that area. Gorgon Research Facility
You can see a map of all deep space outposts here ... https://www.edsm.net/en/galactic-mapping#6/-2740/0/-1000|deepSpaceOutpost

I stand corrected, im pretty sure this is the area I’m at from your description. I just arrived at a base inside an asteroid when I shut down for the night. It was some research facility as I recall, Gorgon Research Facility sounds about right. I cashed in $18 million in exploration data, repaired my ship and refilled my heat sink dispensers.

I have not come across any black holes yet. Do they show up in the system maps?

This is the main draw of the game for me. You can be out and about and all of a sudden you see something in the distance that looks interesting. You go, I wonder if i can get there? Pretty soon you realize, yeah I can, I’m gonna go check it out. Like I said, I’m doing this blind, without looking at the exploration guides so pretty much everything will be a surprise for me.

I started way back with Elite and Elite2:Frontier or whatever it was called on an Amiga 500. This game is like the return of an old friend.

Black holes are hard to see on the system map since they are black against black, but they are there. Not every system has one but as I recall most of the O type stars have a dark passenger.

That's a fantastic summary of what exploration is to me, as well, in this game. I'm an astronomy nut, and I also started with the original Elite back in the '80s. Things have progressed from a graphics and universe point of view since then, but it's wonderful to see how much they got right back then. The central scanner display. God, that thing just fills me with delight!

Enjoy your exploration, Commander! Maybe I'll see you out there in the black sometime.

Well, I’m done visiting NGC 7822. I sold some of my exploration data at the Gorgon Research Facility. I have about $23 million in the bank now. I’m on my way back to the bubble where I will purchase an Asp Explorer. This trip is being done in a Diamondback Explorer. I have a 5A FSD with level 1 engineering for distance. Most everything else is the best D version I can fit. I can do about 39 LY per jump max.

I found a bunch of water worlds, some terraformable, a black hole and a pretty cool 5 star system. No earth like worlds yet.

My next goal is get the Asp, and set it up for at least 45 LY range. Don’t know how hard that will be. Then back out into the black.

Good times!

You visited the place where I took my first expedition in this game. Here is my forum post of it https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...rst-Expedition-(Share-your-first-Exploration)
