This Patch Respects Your Time

Why do people need to take keybinding backups for patches (that roll out automatically in most cases) when literally 2 batch commands would correct this oft repeating issue? It's not good enough and there's really no valid excuse for it.
I agree.
But until they fix it, it is either to have backup or bind your keys again.

Before you do that again, check your options -> controls -> overview entry first. Assuming you have renamed your own configuration file (you really should!) chances are that the client falls back to default settings, as soon as the client can't find any of your equipment. This happens all the time to me do to some shaky usb ports that regularly can't find my EDTracker, but so far never as an result from an update.

In case you don't have your own config file or don't know how to make one, note that it's not just about to know the place where it sits and eventually doing a copy and rename it. You also need to edit the first line you find that is a reference to the name of this file, bare any possible auto-generated version number. After that and if you did everything right, you should see it in your controls overview menu from where you can chose it. If this file sits in the right place, an update would *never* mess with it or even delete it.

It's hard to believe that FDev can't create a "Save As..." function for ED, it's got to be easier than having to deal with all the support questions and bug reports with nearly every patch.

Yep, you are absolutely right but you also could ask the same question in 2 years and wouldn't get a sensible answer. I could be sarcastic and saying 'no hand holding in ED you know?'. But I'm not and can only offer a solution that is nothing but a band aid but works at least.

Yeah, but I was only pointing out a reality obvious to anyone with even moderate computer knowledge. Your post was actually useful, at least to me, as I wasn't aware of the workaround. So, thanks!

I haven’t lost key binds since I don’t know when. Even my beta key binds carried over.

BUT... there is always the option to keep Shadow Copies (windows pc users only), so Previous Version is always a valid option...

I've started two threads on this subject, and participated in others.

But it's not the people in this forum that Frontier have to worry about. It's the players who might or might not continue playing the game, log in and find their bindings missing, and just curse a bit then go off and play something else, never to start the game (or spend money in the Game Extras store) ever again.

It only happened to me if a controller I used before the patch was not found after the patch. Before I bought an Oculus, I was using a PS3 controller sometimes. If the thing wasn't paired after a patch, the games reverted to the default control bindings again. The game didn't know what to do with the mappings pointing towards something that didn't exist.

I am really curious as to what is different between systems like I have and those of people who are getting their binds overwritten over and over.

Do you backup in RL?

So far I never had an issue with keybindings. I always make backups, but never needed one. For more than 3 years now.

I've seen lots of people suffer mightily from bindwipes over the years, but I just fake my way through as it's been few and far between for me personally.

I've been playing so long though that when the rare wipe occurs I can rebind the entire thing in about ten minutes from memory, and keybinds are one of the first things I tweak in any game, so not really a good general example. I'd still like the bindings to tell me WHICH Joy2 I'm binding, because I have pretty much the same number of controls on the throttle as the stick, plus pedals.

I had this happen frequently before I linked my Account to Steam. Ever since it hasn't happened anymore. At one time ED loaded defaults, because there was a problem with one of my controllers. If that happens, ED makes a backup though. After fixing my problem, I could restore that, and everything worked again.

I think I lost them on my Mac back just after 2.1 rolled out, but that was old and flaky so could have been hardware. When I went to PC I had to create new binds of course but I don't think I have lost them since then even when I got a new (like for like) Hotas.

I did make a backup while back which I updated at the time of the last beta but haven't needed it as even the beta binds carried over.

Maybe it is because I don't disconnect the Hotas?

All my RL data gets backed up on an A/B cycle.

The restored backup didn't work.

Wait until everything is software. Your car won't start, etc.

Oh. That's already happening...

You whippersnappers will regret what you did to this century. We're Trumped.

If my case is the typical reason than it's 100% a hardware issue on my side and thus my own responsibility. I can beg them and say pretty please and all, and maybe, one day they probably would hear my prayers. I'd rather trust my own bandaids and leave the whining and waiting to others...

My only peripheral is the Warthog stick, and it tested fine. Even after changing ports.

I am still amazed that after nearly five years of this, the response is to blame the user.

Hell NO! You're a lucky one and can't have much periphery then. To me it's 5 devices, with the keyboard (which is needed to reassign keys to my gameboard) makes already 6, Xbox controller, a foot-switch pedal for pips and EDTracker included. That would cost me easily 5 to 6 hours and bring me 5 years closer to a heart attack. Not cool. Without this renamed file solution I would have long stopped playing, since the ED tracker (must be in fact an USB related board failure) is regularly messing about my settings, for some strange reasons never after an update though.

You're a bit more geared up than me; I "only" run the keyboard and full CH Pro HOTAS with the Fighterstick. :D

I tried to set up a PowerGrid back in the day, but honestly I couldn't find a use for it that wasn't merely a redundant backup arrangement.
