This place makes me wonder....

First there were a wave of threads bemoaning the lack of update from FDev, I even wrote one of them myself, then when we do get an announcement there is a rake of bickering about what was announced, whcih I suppose is typical of an internet forum. But this afternoon, I see someone has started a thread based on what they could drag out of the back of the ice planet closet?

Why so much moaning? We are kind of reaping what we sow here, if we drown every announcement in vitriol, you can understand why they will be reticent about making more announcements. But if they don't make such announcements that just cracks open another jar of vitriol. Why?

It's like some have said in other threads : only way to keep it positive is keep on pushing out more news - as soon as people are allowed time to think it all goes south.

Though with a game like ED, where the releases are 3+ months apart the chance that fdev can keep pushing out news constantly isn't high, so they don't try. And so it will always be like this, as some people won't accept this ... as you are no doubt about to find out :) 🍿

I've been thinking the same thing myself. When I complain about legitimate game-wrecking bugs, I'm considered a "hater of Frontier", but I've practically been a "white knight" defending Frontier regarding this new update, which while not perfect, is pretty darn good IMO. I find the "You're giving us new module slots and forcing us to CHOOSE what goes in those slots, that's so unfair!" threads to be particularly irksome...

Oh well, if nothing else this will just train Frontier not to take any of us seriously.... :(

I believe some of the reactions to the update seem more negative than they are intended to be. I for example am very happy with the added features in the next update and it's actually more than I expected. But in my opinion it would be even better if the new modules would be a core funtionality of the ship rather than optional modules. I believe there is no harm in telling them. Although it might come across as pointless negativity sometimes.
There is also nothing wrong with questioning their design philosophy, they rely on our 'valuable feedback' after all.

I started a whinge thread on Fdev's approach to community engagement I think one of the things we are seeing is that the only way Fdev respond and act on feedback is if i becomes some kind of viral campaign against them raising reasonable feedback to Fdev goes firmly in the "stuff to ignore" bucket and never get's acted on so instead of trying to start a dialogue with Fdev the community throws salt everywhere because if they keep ignoring everyone what else can we do?

I know they put on live streams twice a week, but I often wonder would they benefit from releasing a powerpoint / pdf / forum thread / reddit post / email recapping every streams content. A lot of, nay, most of the streams I simply dont have time to watch, but I can read an article quickly, if there were such things avaibalble to read. And I don't imagine I'm the only middle aged player with a lot of demands on their time through career and family obligations.

I liked phistos coluseum analogy, I've been both gladiator and mob in those terms, but I'm still bewildered by the fact that we shotgunned them with salt for any info, then when the good news came it fuelled arguments. Whatever 🍿

We are kind of working on the assumption that the player base should be considered part of the development team.

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with the desirability of having devs who welcome player feedback and try, within reason, to act on it. But there are a lot of players. With a lot of different opinions. To what extent is a developer obliged to try to accommodate those opinions?

I mean I've written elsewhere about the kind of game I'd rather ED had been. Am I entitled to get 'salty' because Frontier made this a multiplayer game and scrapped the flight physics that made First Encounters such an awesome game?

In short, how much should I expect my opinion to matter to FDev, or any developer? How much influence should I expect to have?

I'm not entirely sure it's just about us being involved even if they stated "we won't take feedback on board" then we would know that we could just drop it design by committee isn't helpful as has been seen in the past with this and other games.

My main gripe is the lack of any engagement positive or negative with the community.

The community management team have totally moved to marketing team at this point as we are given small bits of info when they want and dont get any engagement back. This is what I think causes the multiple storms in teacups because people are frustrated that Fdev just don't listen at all.
