General / Off-Topic Those flat earthers are killing me...

Yup, I'm dying of laughter right now.

Not sure if they're THAT stupid (which would make sense) or they have a very refined sense of humour (which is what I try to believe, because othervise they give me depression)

I ve been fascinated with these folks ever since I stumbled upon them on the internet. Havent met one in person yet.

After a period of entertainment and ridicule I went through the process of analyzing them in order to figure out what makes them believe what they believe. Learning is a process and while its strange to observe adults or even elders ask questions that I would expect a kid to do society usually doesnt laugh about and ridicule kids for being kids. Education is not a given but a privilege and depending on your birthplace and upbringing its not uncommon to meet adults who have no knowledge about common stuff or the world in general. That being said the one quality flatearthers possess and which makes them a target is their unwillingness to learn and using whatever means to justify this stuborness. Its not that the mechanics and laws in question are particularly hard to grasp in the first place. With access to the worlds data base its not really rocket science (pun intended).

Their fanatical eagerness to prove established norms wrong is laughable and a bit desperate to be honest. There are so many flatearther experiments on the internet "proving" that NASA is the devil and the government is trying to fool us which uncover a certain intention to prove they are right, not to discover the truth. Many experiments are set-up and performed in the only one order and combination that would allow them to stay on course. Take the example with water and oil proving that there is no gravity. Would he be really interested to figure out whats going on it would take no more then a single minute to counter his claim and tell him that he is wrong. Most of the time tho they simply dont understand easy concepts and use their ignorance as a base for their own explanation.

These self-proclaimed "leaders" or "spokesmen" show fabricated material and use distraction as well as fear mongering in order to capture and keep an audience. I cannot say if there is a monetary benefit apart from youtube monetization. Usually cults make it a point to retreat into covens which are basically tightly controlled environments giving the cult leadership the ability to maintain discipline and shut out outside dissent. I guess attention itself can be the reward here.

So I believe that most people going into the public know full well what they are doing and either troll the world or do anything to rise attention so thats their motivation explained. What about all the regular members tho who seem to support these far-fetched and unproven theories without having an immediate benefit from it like these leaders do (attention, drama, trolling). I heard about people who live a regular and calm life claiming to be flatearthers at home not trying to get into any trouble. What is their motivation for making themselves targets for ridicule?

I dont have an explanation per se. Human motivation is a complicated thing but people flock to the most ridiculous or insane things for whatever reasons. Mass murderers in prison command a "fan base" or groups of followers despite the terrible things they did. Others never drop the teenage rebel phase and simply try to be different tho usually this expresses itself in their way of life or clothing and doesnt attack fundamental truths of the world. The halo effect might be a reason here as well and might be more applicable if the people in question would be more charismatic or orators but most are not.

I tend to more readily believe claims and statements when they align with my own view on things and I admit that people who act confident come across more believable. Yet these qualities might be sufficient for things that are superficial at best. Whats in the newspapers today? Did x or y cast the main role in this movie? What was the weather forecast for today? Stuff like that.

Whenever I am caught in an argument tho or get more attention then I wanted I tend to rethink my facts and decide from there if I m really speaking from conviction or merely made smalltalk in the first place. It forces you to reconsider your own knowledge and arguments and has the potential to change your opinion depending on what you discover.

I m going out on a limb and claim that most of earths population, even tho they "know" that the earth is a ball and how our solar system looks like is not proficient in scientific terms. Never have studied the material or the underlying theories/history. Simply living in this world will grant you a fundamental understanding on how stuff works even if you dont know the details. As soon as you try to convince people of your own particular viewpoint tho its not enough anymore to simply state your opinion. You need to provide facts and examples and explain things in detail if you hope to change their views. Teachers dont need to be charismatic people (even tho it helps). Standing at the front and saying "this is how it works, you can believe me /flashsmile" is not going to teach people or change their minds. Whatever teachers teach will be challenged either privately or in public so whatever they teach better works out under investigation.

So....giving the benefit of the doubt and granting flatearthers the motivation to figure out the truth on their own its perplexing to watch them struggle so greatly unable to admit they are wrong. Basically they try to re-invent the wheel but fact is that you dont need a fancy scholarship or expensive laboratory to prove the laws of nature. Kids figure out simple laws by using stuff they find lying around. A healthy curiosity as well as willingness to expand effort helps as well. Whatever course they would follow, if they really wanted to find out the truth they would eventually come to the same conclusion as the rest of the world yet thats something they cannot do. Instead they do anything, be it baseless claims or manipulated experiments or using scientific explanations and observations out of context to defend their own view. At some point you have to admit that you are facing a small red-headed child screaming "YOU...NO YOU" and trying to stay calm and convince it with reason wont do you any good.

In the end I came to the conclusion that you simply cannot win with these people. No explanation is too obscure or fantastic to prove em right. Most of them are so experienced by now that its hard to talk them into a corner (think Jehowas witnesses) at all but even if you managed all it takes is one other person saying "I think he is right" to reignite his determination. As such the "cult" of flat earth is a self-reinforcing cycle and its motivation simply to draw attention. After all, the earth being flat or round doesnt affect a persons life in a drastical way. They still use inertia, gravity and speed/acceleration via natural instinct or actual experience. You dont need to understand the mathematical formula in order to grasp that things of a certain size hitting you at a certain speed hurts like hell.

Depending on who you face when you discuss flat earth theories you immediately know you face a troublemaker, moron, rebel, attention seeker(some might know very well what they do, others simply believe aka morons). There really is no room for inocence in this discussion. And due to the fact how easy it is to actually acquire the knowledge in this "problem" I too usually sit back and point and laugh. After all we are not dealing with retards here but adults who raise children or meet lifes challenges in any other way.

And I mean people are free to believe what they want. I dont have a problem with somebody who believes the earth is flat. Simply being wrong alone is no reason to be ridiculed. But Flat earthers are picking a fight here they cannot win and quiet publicly so generating attention which they really dont want. And just like liars or small kids who dont know when to stop they continue to entangle themselves in contradictory or absurd ways .Worse...instead of admitting defeat or insight they lash out by labeling everybody else "stupid" or "sheep" or "haters". Its not uncommon to provide an enemy image in order to keep your population or troops in line. These are tools used by dictators mostly tho so we might add vision of grandeur to the list of things these people are.

The only thing I regret when it comes to flat earthers is the fact that many of them are married, have children or manage companies of their own and if they really believe what they say they will just obstruct the truth probably in an aggressive manner. We know that a few centuries back people claiming a different world view were burned at the stake. The people in power back then who performed these hideous acts were in fact believing that the earth was flat or killing others over the contents of a book. So while its easy to point and laugh and be entertained by "these" people I sometimes remember that in their own families they are the head of power and very likely enforcing their ridiculous world view via violence. or in a physical way (intimidation, fear)

Dude, I can taste colours now, thanks to this post.

I have a brother who (I'm ashamed to say) is a believer of pretty much every conspiracy theory going (including, ironically, lizard people Illuminati :)). But even he isn't gullible enough to be a flat earther.
