Thought I would have to self destruct

I went to Qwent to get my power plant and distributors upgraded and boost his level to 3 to unlock Palin.

On leaving, I found that my thrusters were inoperable and I had 5 minutes to vacate the base.

Ah, it's a planetary base so maybe I have to push vertical thrusters for a few seconds.
No dice.
There were no errors displayed on the screen, just no response.

Ah. My old X56F drivers sometimes lose their keybinds on the non-standard keys so I clicked the refresh button.
No joy. 3 minutes left.

Checking the modules, I saw that the thrusters were inactivated. So I clicked to activate, it made a sound.
Great, I thought. But no response.
2:30 remaining.

Checked the power. less than 50% consumption. All modules 100%
Clicked repair to use AFMU.... "Module Repaired," it stated.
No dice.
2:30 seconds.

deactivated all modules and tried to reactivate them.
Still could not reactivate the thrusters.
2 minutes

Last resort: Reboot
"Reboot sequence failed!"
No dice.

GGRRR!


1 minute remaining, I logged off.

Logged back on

30 seconds remaining!!!! What the?!?!?!?

No thrusters.

Shutdown Elite, restarted...

30 seconds remaining.

No thrusters.

Logged off

Time to hit the interwebs...
Found nothing other than references to suicide or restarting. Most dated 2014 and 2015

Rebooted in Horizons (1.6 mode)

Error: this game does not have planetary rendering shaders: cannot load commander... *This is paraphrased, can't rememeber the exact error.

Panicking, I clicked OK
Do you want to cancel or load in planetary orbit.
After some hesitation, I clicked, Load in orbit.

My thrusters were activated and working normally...

Scary moment there,

I still have 50M or so in exploration data to cash in with Palin. Could NOT face losing that lot!

Im surprised that you didn't find mention of this problem on the web or forum. I know I have read other cmdrs having the exact issue probably 4 or 5 times. I believe it is related to power issues, IIRC it requires you holding the up thrust, the same as when you take off from the planet surface, which causes the ships engines to 'come online'. I think it is a bug.

Your solution was of course good as well. You can also do this when having ground clipping issues where the SRV falls through the floor.

Edit: Although you say you tried that, im sure I have read that was the solution but perhaps combined with shutting down other modules first.

had the same problem, trusters off after the rating 5 upgrade of the fsd.

i also solved via 1.6. version, but AFTER ditching the new mods. bad for me.
 
Yup, this is a thing.

Not sure if fixable. I did notice an exact pattern but have been in the deep a while and the details elude me.

It's when you mod the thrusters in a certain way iirc. Come to surface, undock, and it believes the thrusters are offline. No ability to turn them on.

If this crops up I basically immediately quit, reload Elite without Horizons, and it kicks me back to orbit with everything operational.

I had this problem at Farseer after a grade 3 roll for dirty drives yesterday too. After a bit of forum searching and pointers from others, I tried the up thrusters thing and it worked for me - ship went through the "restarting thrusters" noises you get when taking off from a planet and, eventually, up we went! The forum posts do seem to imply this doesn't always work but the "use 1.6" method does so guess I just got lucky. Glad to hear you made it - would have been a terrible waste of MTs if you hadn't ;)
