Newcomer / Intro Thought it wouldn't happen to me

I thought I was so careful, I thought it couldn't happen to me. Just boosted my Cobra into the side of a station, lost all my cargo and destroyed my ship. But it could have been so much worse, I only had quite a basic Cobra so lost about 34k insurance and another 50k in cargo, and I've got 350k left. It's not a disaster... but an evening of play wasted and somewhat of a financial setback.

Please learn from my mistake!

I just got a bit cocky and blase about docking. Hopefully won't be doing that again!

You have not done "I can squeeze through there" or "I can ram him out the way" yet, so there will be more.

So true.
...and the 'oh I forgot to put my landing gear up. i think I'll just put it away while I'm trying to get out the Post box' then reality hits that you've sped up before lining up! :(

I once hit end by mistake instead of retracting landing gear and vomited 100 tons of performance enhancers inside an orbis station for which I got fined a firther 25,000cr. You can add this one to your to-do list.

2 keybinds all good pilots remove ASAP:

TAB for boost
dump all cargo

Yep, I've done both

Yaaa, me too sigh! forgot to get docking clearance, got warning at entrance, backed out then hit Tab instead of Q trying to get docking clearance......That T7 full of Imperial Slaves just wouldn't pull up enough, bounce of the wall and hull integrity compromised . smoking chunks

*almost* did it myself today after a long period of no dumb accidents

"line up, request docking, boost into station..."
"oh hell i'm in an Asp, not a Vulture... oh F"
"cargo scoop open... throttle back... gear down... STOP you fat cow..."

...two inches to spare. i'm going to strip and sell that lardbucket and just use the Vulture for smuggling operations.

My most frequent mistake is entering a station without permission. Fortunately I always fly in either a Viper, Cobra, or Eagle, so when I am warned I can stop and back out pretty quickly. And I make this mistake mostly when I'm sleepy. This is also when I make the most mistakes while exploring, nodding off during a warp to another system.

So another good rule is not to play while sleepy :D Common sense, perhaps... but its so hard to stop sometimes :)

I'm just glad you didn't lose more than you had. Losing on a night's progress sucks, but imagine losing a month's progress with one death. I can only imagine the frustration of losing out that big.

Good luck on your future endeavors.

Yeah, thanks. It would be awful to lose out that much, or be back to a Sidewinder and 1000CR or whatever. I am pretty conservative with my in game finances - I would not consider flying without insurance, and I only ever invest a maximum of 1/2 my capital in cargo, so as to maintain a reasonable buffer in case of mishaps. This means that I probably have a lot more time between ship upgrades than a lot of people, but that's fine with me. The longer I have new stuff to try and aim for the better!

A tip for new players - you can't boost with your landing gear down, so it's really good practice to lower your gear when you're anywhere near or in a station, and keep it down until you're clear of the letterbox on the way out. This does not apply if you're smuggling and trying to enter/leave a station as fast as possible, of course - then you take the risk!

I had been following this rule very strictly until recently, and actually last night I spotted that I had got a bit slack/blasé and made a mental note to self to start putting my gear down early again. Unfortunately, I didn't act on this in time to prevent my mishap!

It's few days now since I have boosted at full speed into an asteroid head on. I just did not see it as I was watching my target with trackir. Lost about 05, million in bounties. :D

Sometimes one has to learn it the hard way.

I almost always struggle to detach myself from ED at night and end up flying whilst very sleepy
(and sometimes under the influence ).
So far I've not destroyed my ship but I have incurred dumb ass fines for; Entering a docking bay without permission, dumping cargo at a docking bay entrance, and last night .... Pad loitering!
I wasn't even sleepy at the time but I was in a hurry (the Darts was about to start) and my Adder was refusing to dock..... forward a bit - back a bit etc etc ah damn it! hit the wrong button, shot off of my pad, onto a neighboring pad, bounced around for a bit causing damage and racking up a nice fine :(

Aren't I a silly boy then!

As a newbie, many thanks for this tip! Added a CTRL + to each of these keybindings, to avoid accidentally hitting them. I did boost once into a star which almost got me fried. Didn't think to remap the key at the time. Did it now.

Almost the same, but maybe even dumber?...
Yesterday I was loaded up with 20 holds full of RARES, and on leaving the station I sort of over-accelerated.
I forgot how fast a Cobra can accelerate and was going around 200 as I came up to the keyhole... and found somebody coming in!
Panic, swerve, hit the wall, explode and die.
There are now 20 canisters of rares floating around inside that station, for the enterprising Sidewinder!
Luck to whoever.

Not as bad as boosting into a station... but I did smash my Clipper into an asteroid 'cuz she's so ass heavy when turning at full speed. 100% hull, full shields, gone in an instant, along with 800k+ and 1000k+ unclaimed Federation and Alliance bounties, respectively. Lesson learned: slow down before turning to chase the anaconda behind you in a RES...

And... turn in bounties over a million cr... >.>

Lost a T6 and around 50 tones of rares dong that once. Just paid the insurance and casually shut the game down for the night!

Ouch... that sounds like a lot of credits down the drain. Couldn't blame you calling it a night at that point :) I probably would have smashed my PC and assaulted someone with my keyboard :D
