I logged back in to Elite today after a few months away.
Indeed I only played a couple of hours since the 2.2 update dropped, having been rather underwhelmed by the 'new' content offered at the time. During that time I kept up to date with the goings on in the came courtesy of Youtube and the forums. Today however I had a strange urge to dust off the HOTAS and blow the cobwebs from my Anaconda. Upon logging in I found my ship floating exactly where I had left it as if I had never been away; everything was exactly the same. Nothing seemed to have changed. Nothing at all.
I had a feel around for the controls and quickly got back into the groove. Literally the first thing I happened across was a High Intensity Combat Zone which seemed like a fun place to start. Upon entering I was excited to see 2 capital ships fighting it out. I chose a side and got stuck in. Fairly soon it became obvious that no one was paying me the slightest bit of attention as I destroyed the heat relays on the opposing ship. Pop, pop, pop, one by one and the thing didn't even take a pot shot at me. Eventually the thing was crippled and began to charge its FSD for escape. I rubbed my hands together in anticipation of a handsome reward for driving off this behemoth.
150k. That was my reward.
Not to be down hearted I set about destroying the other foe still in the area. Strangely, despite blowing dozens to pieces, I only received a payout about for about 1 in 5 I destroyed. No, I was not in a wing, no there were no other human players about.
So all in all, after an hour and a half of play I made about 750k in combat bonds. I logged back out feeling a little conned. Maybe I'll await the next update.
I think the reason why it's been so long since I last played was because I just haven't really needed to. There is so little new content in the game that it's more pleasurable to get the highlights from Youtubers like Obsidian Ant, rather than having to bore myself rigid actually playing the other 90% of the game. As for the development of the 'story', it seems so far removed from the normal gameplay as to be utterly irrelevant as far as I'm concerned.
