Thoughts on a new GPU? GTX 960 enough?

I'm still running an ancient GeForce GTX 460, and it runs Elite: Dangerous at 1080p at mostly-high settings with no problem though I keep supersampling at 1.0X and anti-aliasing disabled. I want to get into the VR game once the consumer Oculus Rift device is available, and I assume a GTX 460 will be woefully underpowered. Depending on reviews, I'd either get the CV1, or try to get a cheap used DK2 from someone who's upgrading.

How would a GeForce GTX 960 perform? I know it's kind of a mid-range budget card, but so is my old 460 and it does fine for now.

Go with the best card your budget allows. I had a 970 and returned it within a month for a 980ti. My 970 played the game well, but i couldnt crank up the settings past medium in most instances. VR takes as much power as you can throw at it.

The 980 Ti has my attention for sure, but that's such a big chunk of change, and who knows what NVIDIA or AMD will have out by the time CV1 is released.

What about SLI and Oculus? Good or bad? Going back to the 960 GTX idea, if SLI works well I could always double up on that GPU later on.

My 970 (Gigabyte G1) runs Ultra settings on everything and my DK2 is very smooth. Currently, I'm even running 1.5x in-game super sample (no DSR in nvidia control panel) - but with the Oculus slider at about 50% in-game. The 1.5x SS improves text readability dramatically with no visible loss of setting the Oculus slider at 50%. That seems to be the best combo.

So, a 970 is great for DK2. CV1, however, might be a different story. We'll have to see...

Check out the "compendium" sticky thread (in this forum) for lots of suggested settings.

Oculus themselves say:
The recommended PC specification is an NVIDIA GTX 970 or AMD 290, Intel i5-4590, and 8GB RAM. This configuration will be held for the lifetime of the Rift and should drop in price over time.

I'd plan to go a bit above that for ED.
However, it's too early to tell what hardware will run ED on CV1 well. CV1 runs at 90Hz and higher resolution than DK2, but there are a boat load of optimisations coming in drivers and in the SDK - and no doubt new cards too. My 770 is borderline ok with the DK2 right now, but I'm going to hold out until a few days before a CV1 is in my hands before upgrading.
