Thoughts on changing the main menu and loading screens

I like to think up a back story for my pilot - where she's from, how her life has been so far etc. It makes the game more interesting to me, especially if I can find my pilot's motivation for acting as she does in the game (such as now when she's been exploring for three months).

Anyway, perhaps it's just me, but I find it much easier to relate to a character, I can see, just as I like it when I can see my ship from time to time. It gives this "Yes, this is me, and this is my ship" feeling. It's a bit like when you meet someone you have so far only chatted with online. Suddenly they become more "real" in a sense.

So far, all I can see of my pilot is her feet. They're nice and all, but it's just not the same. My ship I see only when outfitting or when landed on a planet.

With 2.3 we should be able to create a character so we finally have a head to go with those feet. Hopefully we will also (eventually or from the start) be able to create different body shapes, add different clothing and so on.

My thoughts are as follows: Could it be an idea to make the main menu and the loading screens more individual, to support the identification with one's pilot and ship?

Loading screen:
At the moment the loading screen shows a completely anonymized, orange "not completely wireframe" version of the ship, you are flying (although without ship kits).

Why not show the actual ship you are flying in stead? Complete with any ship kits, paint jobs, wear and tear and so on.

I'm no programmer (at least not on this level), but it strikes me as something that could very easily be implemented, since we already can see our ship from the outside in-game.

It would also make it more interesting to buy paintjobs etc. if you see them more often.

Main Menu screen:
I really like the main menu image, but after having seen it every day for months and months it kinda becomes something you don't see anymore (like the box of stuff that has been standing in the corner of the room forever).

Imagine if the main menu screen showed your pilot doing different things. I'm not taling about animated images, just stills that show your pilot at the helm, in the Scarab, at a station, eating a snack, looking at screens, fixing the engine and so on.

These images could even be made so that they correspond with whatever you are doing in the game at the moment (if you are out exploring, docked, landed on a planet and so on).

I realize that such changes really don't change the actual game at all, but I think they could do loads for the immersion and the way we know and identify with our pilot and ship.

What are your thoughts on this?

I would like the backdrop to change, but I would also like these to be real places in game and it display what the location is.

The ridges and valleys on that moon look most excellent for some SLF canyon runs.

Or maybe some shots of brain tree plantations, the newly discovered ancient ruins, maybe the crashed ship.

I know its only seen for a few seconds as you select game mode and type abuse at your friends before logging in, but its a good opportunity to showcase the galaxy.

The spinning ship whilst it loads, not sure if its a balance of cpu for that whilst your game loads behind the scenes, but I do like the idea of a tumbling colour view of your ship with current ship kit applied.

Maybe with hardpoints opening and stowing every so often and landing gear deploying etc.

Its probably a looping video of the ship, so work to render "your" ship alot for only 10-30secs screen time.

Currently the menu screen is just a simple video file that plays in a loop, by changing the file name you can have whatever backing you want.. I.e. CQC background in main game, etc. Even your own videos.

If the camera system was up to short recordings, you set you favourite clips as a playlist or random via an options menu.

Strikes me as limited appeal feature though.

Yeah, OP u can actually manually change the main menu video to anything you'd like. In [Elite Dangerous\Products\elite-dangerous-64\Movies] rename FrontEndA.webm to something else, add your desired .webm video, rename it FrontEndA.webm, boom, new main menu video. I just use one of the alternative videos already in the folder, they are cool, especially the space elevator one.

It's a nice little change after seeing the original one a million times.

Woah, didn't know about this one. Thanks.

I didn't know this. If FD makes it possible for us to move the camera so we can see our pilot, it's even possible to add such a picture yourself :)

Nice idea, also it should be a pleasing update they can do without all the bug fallout like we have from the that last update you know the one, instafail missions ;) still! happening.

Nice ideas.

Also, Namco's playing a mini game while the main game is loading patent has expired. You could have a mini version of virus with your ship running in the corner. :)

I don't agree with any of your ideas, I actually hated most of it, but +rep regardless, becuase the main menu and the loading could be improved/changed.

While not a necessity, I'd like to see my CMDR on the main menu screen when logging in.

Just standing there in some sort of cool pose, that changes ideally.
Obviously once 2.3 is out. Otherwise we'd all be looking at headless black suited CMDRs. Lol

Gonna try out the file tweak in a sec. Sounds cool. Lol

I believe that the loading screen wireframe ships are dedicated models specifically for the loading screen (i.e. they are not the same models that are displayed in-game).

I am not sure and cannot check now, but they *might* also be the same ones that appear on your cockpit when targeting etc.

You are right... They are the files that are easily harvested.

Hi Guys, In regards to the "Loading Screen", Mine is quite gittery, is that a normal thing or is there a problem with the software.?

Those orange wireframe models I think look great. Hope they are not changed, although I would like them to show the ship kit I have installed.

Is it possible to shorten the boilerplate videos? I've been playing the game now for a couple of years. I know that it's Elite Dangerous. And I know that it's Frontier Developments that made it.
