Thoughts on dev direction...

So I'm a multi platform/pc gamer. Play all kinds of games. Most recently NMS for space sims. Though I enjoy it, and feel only a community like ours could appreciate what they did with it. Not the folks who are causing all this news about it. Anyway...

Been playing Star citizen since we first got flight mode too. Now that we can travel in space, soon land on planets. I've noticed something. Not graphics, or anything like that..

Elite dangerous is huge right.. And now we can land on rocks. And drive our 6x6 around. It's cool.... Even today. I can tell you from playing SC that elite feels hmm like an fps in space.. I'll explain

All the updates from devs I appreciate, and have some great features. But it's hard now for me to feel connected to elite when I don't feel I'm anything but a ship, and all of a sudden a 6x6. I can't put into words how much of a game changer it is to get out of your seat, while flying...run over and hit the head, take a nap, mess with a panel, jump into a turret.. Etc. I don't mean transport to these things I mean walk fps style. SC is so tiny by comparison but seems so large because my size is not represented by my ship but my character. This is a massive deal. And I personally feel the devs need to focus on this, just the ship part, wait on the walking on planets, stations, etc. Exploring and interaction with your ship changes so much. Just my two cents. Play SC and tell me I'm wrong.. Not comparing the two. I've been playing elite longer than most of you and haven't stopped. Never saying one is better than the other, they have gone different directions. Enjoying the variety.

Fly safe.

I dont think the difference in direction really exists in the way you describe. As mentioned, since the early days 'spacelegs' has been part of the plan. With avatar-creation and multi-crew coming this season, many expect some form of spacelegs to come next season. Remember that all ships have been designed with interior-walking in mind (see the art book for example). Remember that they have worked on first person elements using an older version of the ED engine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Glr71X-cr84
However, while spacelegs has been confirmed to be 'planned', and they have confirmed teams are working on S3 and S4, we dont know which of them will be it yet.

Regardless, I agree. the concept of walking around your ship is a big thing for me, and I like it in both SC and X:R. I dont like how both executed it, but the concept is good.

Sounds almost quaint in the age of VR. Nothing SC has can match that for immersion.

In Elite, I'm a person flying a spaceship. The scale is tremendous! My hands in the game match my hands on the HOTAS. In SC i'm just a man at a desk moving a mouse around to manipulate an avatar around on a screen. It's so stale in comparison.

This belittling other space sims and pretending "you're the ship" started as some nonsense Roberts spouted in 2013 and really seems hopelessly dated post consumer release of Rift and Vive. Might as well brag about Genesis doing what Nintendon't.

VR is the gamechanger for sims. A clunky Crysis mod just doesn't measure up to that advance.

Spacelegs will come, we just don't know when. We believe it will be in Season 3. Q4 2016 - Q1/2 2017

Some of your points may be valid. And on both our parts personal perception is key. You say you're a pilot in elite. But your defence to this is artificially design arms that follow your hotas input much like a racing game steering wheel and shift. I don't see how that makes you feel like a pilot. Maybe one that is crippled. Do your legs ever move? Nope. Sure your pilot may move his hands around in the same 2 recurring animations. But his/her legs are static, much like the large decal that is your supposed cockpit. You never leave your seat. Transporting to a 6x6 doesn't count.

I know it's on its way. But imagine how the games assets look now. Go to camera mode and look. It's really not that impressive from a ships supposed perspective up close. Transition that to FPS walking around, and I don't want to imagine the poor potentially quality. Unless the devs plan to completely rebuild the assets in fps for more detail.

I guess we really don't know much about it, what it would look like, they don't share this sort of stuff with us.. Which has always bothered me. If you plan for a long support cycle, and want your supporters to continue to support your product, it might be a good idea to update the progress of promised of content and features they sold me and thousands of others on when they were asking for our backing. I'm thinking if many of the backers knew they wouldn't see the majority of the features that were promised to us, for 5-8 years, backers including myself may have rethought it.

Elite is already behind in features. Cookie crubs to get funding long term is a bad business practice and the community will tire of it. Releasing a few features here and there and calling it a season. Is no better than games with dlc, and micro transactions, oh elite has that too..

I'm desperate for Military Roles in loaned Ships but understandably makes sense once more life is already there first...passengers, aliens, other races, wars around stations/bases... so it then warrants these Military Roles to bring control of chaos by fury.

Not played SC or Elite for a while but I'm 100 or so hours into NMS and I understand your point OP. It's up to FD what they do but personally I'll not be buying anymore content for Elite until at least atmospheric planetary landings are in, but when it does I'll probably be all over it like a rash, same goes for walking about FPS stylee. I'm having such a blast just walking around on some of the planets in NMS.

Elite is primarily a Spaceship game though and it does that amazingly well. I just wish they'd flesh out the "careers" a LOT more and add more varied content instead of concentrating on PvP pew pew stuff all the time.

You won't get any argument from me about ED and features "in general". But I suspect that ED will look like a shining beacon of feature development when put next to whatever the crowd at CIG will put out for SC in the undefined Roberts vehicle known as the "MVP" minimum viable product. They seem like they will very much be going down the same route as ED.

As for micro transactions in ED. A few skins and schizzle that have zero effect on the game beyond cosmetic. Surely that's not worth mentioning. SC on the other hand well jury is out the present way of funding the game development is very much pay to win with being able to pre buy powerful ships and in game money before release. I'm speaking for myself here and maybe it's overly cynical but I can't see that mind set of monetising the game changing on release of the MVP.
