Thoughts on NMS

Please forgive me if any of this has been stated before; since "The Engineers" went live, I've not played nor particularly read the forums, so I may be missing much.

OK, so NMS, No Man's Sky to anyone who's been living under a rock for the last 6 months... is supposed to be so big that you'll never meet another player, among other things. Well, I don't know about that, but big is good. It does seem to be pretty and I'll be trying it.

So size... is it that big? I personally would find it hard to believe it's even 1% the size of E:D, but... does it need to be to be that big? I mean, if every commander in E:D stared on a random world somewhere in the galaxy, would anyone ever meet another? Probably not, at least for a while. Even so, I have to assume that in NMS people will want to improve/upgrade their ship, it makes sense if it's possible (and if it isn't then a lot of the point of the game is lost). To improve the ship, one needs parts, and so components, leading to a requirement for resources, if it's to be reasonable. The only other option is the way of most MMOs to base it on level or money, and then it gets boring.

The thing is, even if 99.9% of the players keep any discoveries to themselves, that 0.1% will share on some social media, where they got the uber-game-changing-resource (at least in their mind), and once that happens, then people will start to congregate. It will be no different in that respect, and grieving (if it is even possible in the game - we don't know yet, of course) will be as rampant as in any other.

tl;dr
To put it another way, look at NMS for its graphic style, or for the exploration, but not for an escape for what makes Elite, or Eve bad, because all those things will follow you there, or to Star Citizen. For that, we need to change the competitive attitude of (mostly but not exclusively) young white male players. It has its place for sure, but I believe arenas are the best place for such things, not cooperative and exploration games.

Thank you for reading. Please feel free to comment your own opinions, but also please, try to keep it civil.

Been watching demo vids on you tube and it's just to cartoony for me. A bit like a huge marshmallow multi coloured candyfloss world goo.

Flimley
