Thrice bitten, still not shy ... just plain stupid!

Hello cmdrs,

It's cmdr calamity-stupid reporting in ... double-barelled because I'm double stupid!

Well, after last weekends mishap when I took a scientist out for a spin (on Sunday morning) in my shiny new passenger cabin, without fully doing the maths (it was about a 700ly round trip) and I was also taking my time scanning sytems on route to make a little cash - well, he started making demands that I refused, plus, there are only so many hours in a Sunday. The upshot being I logged out, realised that evening that I was on a timer, then grovelled with my better half on Monday evening for a few hours play time ... my passenger got so unhappy he ejected himself without paying!

So, I arrive at this weekend with a miniscule more knowledge. I take another scientist passenger and this time run the trip by the numbers, no scanning, no delays, which equalled no demands and a decent 1.6M payout ... you would think I'm learning.

Roll forward to today. I am ready for engineering and take a 300ly+ journey to Maia for my meta alloy. I arrive, clean shaven, smelling nice and feeling good. I look around for Darnielle's and notice a USS, hey, I've arrived, may as well check it out eh?

After targetting it, I find it is a "non-human signal, threat 7".

Now it seems that this morning I took 2 "stupid pills" instead of the normal 1.

Having flown around a few high intensity combat zones scanning ships and wakes with no weapons on my hardpoints and being completely ignored, I thought to myself "this will be the same, I'll drop in, see a few thargoids, say hello, then head off" ... how very, very wrong I was.

I dropped into what I guess was a thargoid welcome party ... before I could catch my breath the shields on my little AspX were down, you know the rest, flashing lights, reports of hull damage ... goodbye cruel ED world.

And so my stupidity continued, I had treble rebuy (a lesson learnt from a previous attempt to restore the world's clever-stupid balance of power) but I guess I was not paying attention to my choices ... I thought I had selected to rebuy everything, but found myself back at a station without any opt internal modules ... oh, and just like last time ... I'd lost millions in carto data I was saving for engineer rep.

So, stuck out in Maia with just a single rebuy, can't even afford an ADS, guess engineering is back on hold as even a meta-alloy will put me under rebuy ... and I don't fancy flying around with that in my hold!

Only saving grace is that before all of this happened, I had bought a 12 seat 1st class passenger cabin that I placed in storage! It took a fair few credits to have it sent over to Maia from the bubble plus a 1 hour delivery time, but hey ho, before today's play time was all used up it arrived and is now tucked asleep inside my AspX.

So, another weekend's grind with not much to show except a few bruises and a lighter wallet, but onwards and upwards, bring on next weekend ... hopefully a few juicy passenger runs, or failing that, I will give in ... and do a first R2R run to top up my bank account!

Well, signing off cmdrs, hope you all fly safely and stay clever!

Yep, well, that all sucks a lot.

Knowing the area as I do, you should be able to rustle up about 14 rebuys for that Asp in an hour and a half, maybe two if you sight-see along the way.

LOL, good story-telling CMDR. Non-human signal threat 7!!! You got some pluck. I have only just started looking into taking on Thargoids, a few days ago I managed to lose 2 fully engineered T10s in those threat 7s, and I now dare not go in them, (until I have unlocked the Guardian weapons maybe.) It was particularly galling, as I have managed to avoid seeing the rebuy screen for many months now.

Keep having fun, fly safe!

Yes agree, when I had a quick look at the galaxy map before I logged out I was surprised how far out I was ... so should get my carto data back pretty quickly. Any recommendations on sight-seeing that neck of the woods?

Set a course heading for HIP 19026, then make a hard that-a-way towards HIP 18077, then out through the California Nebula. From there, head towards the galactic ceiling, then the floor on your way back. You won't be broke for long, especially with a DSS.

Thanks for the advice CMDR.

Excellent and entertaining post CMDR.

One of my favorite things in Elite is where you come up with “A Plan”.
And it’s a cunning plan.
It could even work.

Aand then you see a shiny on the way.

My Sunday, I had a shopping list. MAs and Neofabric Insulators that can be best found on wrecked mega ships.
Oo - a working scientific megaship with interesting logs in the same system! And closer!
Oo those logs were cool!
Now I’ll just prise open the cargo bay with these hatchbreakers.

WARNING!
ILLEGAL ACTIVITY DETECTED!
SYSTEM SECURITY INBOUND 1:29!

Oh - I DID have to do it on wrecked mega ships, not working ones with 3 vipers on standby.

I didn’t take a rebuy, but I did think: “I’d better just pay off that fine so I’m clean in this system, as I haven’t done my ‘thing’ yet”

C&P rules article 7 paragraph 2:
YOU GO TO JAIL, DUDE!

Wait - what?

IT’S THE LAW!
IGNORANCE IS NO EXCUSE!

Sigh fine, so I went back and broke into the wrecked mega ships and rescued a bunch of Escape Pods. All good.

Now - MAs.

Now I like to think of myself as a Barnacle and MA connoisseur.
Not for me buying them at Darnielles’ for cash. No - for I subscribed to CMDR Pan Piper’s excellent barnacle thread which has a spreadsheet showing where they are and which ones are ripe. So I will pick mine fresh from the vine. Yes indeed.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...3GQhC5KT-o9u05ihWKXebt4BcM/edit#gid=223643326

So I grab the nearest one on the spreadsheet.
This is shooting fish in a barrel!

Uh- it’s on the dark side. (half an hour flying blind to co-ords) Peering through the gloom “maybe I should have tried another longitude”
Land “At last”
SRV out off we go.

TRESSPASS DETECTED!
SECURITY RESPONSE INITIATED!

Wait - what?

Oh I have heard of this before, haven’t seen it for a while.
Okay fine whatever, you don’t scare me. Kill 3 skimmers.
Go harvest the Barnacle.
One MA.

Wait - what: “ONE” MA?
Relog.
3 more skimmers spawn.

Run run run.
Check spreadsheet - THIS BARNACLE HAS ONE ONLY MA AND IS GUARDED!

15 more relogs at 3 skimmers per log? Uh.
(Checks spreadsheet)
Oh here’s a 4 MA unguarded barnacle on the sunny side of the same planet.

It’s this combo of infuriating detail, and “best laid plans” that makes the game for me.

Regarding the passenger missions, I do 'em so fast that my passengers probably struggle to get a clear view of their destination.

You can try to make a trip of it - hunt some USSs, do a little surface-prospecting etc - but when your passengers start pestering you for booze and clothes it soon becomes a PITA so I'd rather not give them the chance.

In and out.
Somebody will be waiting at the bottom of the disembarkation ramp to collect your credits and G5 mat's.
Thank you for flying Stealthie Spaceways and we don't really care if you enjoyed your flight or not.

Hehe ... did you make it out?

LOL ... is it pretty much guaranteed that if you run it by the numbers you won't get any demands? Before my disaster today, I also ran 12 politicians in my shiny new 12 seater before storing it, it was only 1 jump, it said that hostile ships might be sent ... as soon as I launched I got a mission update telling me they had and to destroy them. Now on Saturday, I ran a few 1 jump refugee runs just for rep increase, and got interdicted on one of them but managed to outrun them back into supercruise and got away with it. So before my politician run, I added a small pulse laser & multi cannon to my hardpoints. Yes, I got interdicted and was taking hits, so this time I turned and faced them and found it pretty easy to take him down. I have not done any combat apart from the basic trainer mission ... maybe ED was being easy on me. Something had happened to my FSD though as it took almost a minute to charge up.

The level of your opponents ramps up with your combat rank and the ships they fly changes depending on the ships you are flying.

I noticed this and kept my combat rank low for a long time. But then I found it was just too much fun.

Yes, I have to agree. The grind, the shiny distractions, the big disappointments ... all lightly peppered with some success ... just like real life!

".. I thought I had selected to rebuy everything, "

Admittedly, the way the rebuy options are presented could be a bit clearer.

Good attitude, better than a "rage quit" post by light years.

Stay with it, you'll have more CR and ships than you need soon enough.

BTW, I did the same with a fully engineered G5 Corvette, lost all the modules.

FD Support came through and helped me recover completely and politely pointed out the error of my ways.

When I was a kid - I'd like to cheat and be the OP player who could tackle those pesky bad guys.
Eventually, I realised that swatting flies instead of a challenge ruined the game.

But thanks to things like tomb raider and Quake (and ahem Elite+) I'd save a game, constantly and reload on any mild mishap.
So not OP, but cheating per se to be 100% ammo, weapons etc.

Until Half-life 1 where the levels had some clever designs and balancing (even more so in HL2, and now most modern games have this Lucasarts Monkey Island idea that games are to be played to be finished, not to punish) - and a friend taught me to play games like one plays golf.

Sure landing on the fairway is the goal,
but playing out of the rough and the bunkers showing your mettle with an unfair pot of luck, that's where they the game lies.

Well played Commander 07

Glad to be of service CMDR! I'm just getting warmed up ... just wait until I start playing with neutron boosting ... I may have to post my whereabouts so clever CMDRs can steer clear <wink>
